Manny Ramirez and his seedy appearance ...

This guy should clean up his image. For baseball purists, his appearance is a disgrace. Sure, he's a future hall-of-famer, but he looks ridiculous. Hispanic Rasta. Nice.

And the number 99? Beer League Softball. Number should be retired by all LA sports franchises. Only one number 99 for LA ... GRETZKY. Sorry, Manny, but you are a HUGE tool.
There's a hole in my head where the rain comes in.

Manny said during his press conference he will be cutting his hair, per Dodgers rules, but he didn't say what type of hair cut he will get. Sounds like his rasta look will be gone.

From what I've heard on ESPN, he was originally going to wear number 28, then the team switched it to 66...and then by the time he put on the jersey they had switched to 99. Sounds like he had little, if any, input on his jersey number.

He can save it and donate it to the studio that does the next "Predator" movie. That should save some time and money on special effects!

Manny Ramirez's true colors have been on display for the past few weeks. I have zero respect for him...nor do many of his ex-teammates apparently. He is a lazy quitter.
  • There was a highlight on Sportscenter that showed him jogging(not running) after a ball in the outfield last night. Sad to think a lazy arse like him makes millions to hit a ball with a wooden stick! image

Sad to think a lazy arse like him makes millions to hit a ball with a wooden stick!

He may be lazy, but there's no question he's one of the most fearsome hitters to have played the game. Hitting a baseball with a wooden stick may be the single most difficult thing to do in all of sports.

That's all well and good but I guess I look just as much at a person's character as I do their ability. He has none so I could care less about how great he is. He's lazy and self-centered and it's guys like him that are a cancer on the modern game.

You don't have to like the guy personally to appreciate his talent. There have been dozens of garde A jerks in sports who have put up outstanding numbers.

Edit: Though he wore out his welcome in Boston, I'd bet an honest Sox fan wouldn't argue with the fact that Manny was one of the key reasons they won TWO World Series after winning none in 80 years. Winning is a great deodarant.

How disgraceful was Ty Cobb climbing in to the stands and attacking a handicapped man?
How disgraceful was Cap Anson and his avowed racism?
How disgraceful were Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle for constantly cheating on their wives?
How disgraceful was major league baseball for not allowing african american players for the first half of the 20th century?

I could go on and on. Stop living in fantasy land and thinking this game is pristine and free of disgraceful acts and players. If you really think Manny Ramirez is disgracing the game by growing his hair long, get a grip on reality.

I guess everybody thinks that Manny is a lock for the HOF, but I'm not so sure. 36 years old, and he's going to need a couple of more good years to get in I would think, because his big numbers all came in the steroid era. 500 homers shouldn't be a shoe-in any more.

He's never even won an MVP. Acting like a baby now sure isn't going to help his chances.

All great points, and I'd also add that you can't tell anything about someone's character based on what you see and hear about that person on television. For all any of us know Manny is the nicest guy on the planet.

If you watch enough baseball you quickly notice that about 60% of all outfielders aren't afraid to dog it in the field from time to time. What sets Manny apart is that he doesn't try to hide it. And as far as giving it 100%, you can include the scores of fat-asses that currently hold roster spots on an MLB team in that category, since nobody who's 60 lbs. overweight can be said to be 'giving it 100%' at any point during the season. It's fine to pitch Manny under the bus, but you better toss Prince Fielder, C.C. Sabathia, and all the rest of them under there as well.

    Right on brotha!

The dreads, the swagger, the ability, it's all made me become a big fan of Manny's over the past few seasons. He stays true to himself and doesn't try to "fit in" for the sake of baseball "purists".

I'm so happy with this trade. I finally get to root for Manny since he's out of Beantown and in with the Dodger's (a sentimental favorite due to growing up near dodgertown), and I'm loving it!

I believe they were the only team to have that rule. ESPN radio was reporting the hair rule is a Dodger rule that is part of Joe Torre's team rules. I guess Joe must have instituted the rules like the Yankees had while he was there. I like the fact Manny said he would have no problem cutting his hair and that he wanted no special rules for him as he's part of the team. Manny also said something like, "hey it's only hair, it will grow back, right (with a chuckle)? lol

    Not much, but hey...

I am not to say Manny doesn't have his faults, but he has been given a LABEL to live up to.

I don't know him personally, but what I do know that on the field, he does always show up on time, and more often than MOST players, he gets the job done. I am not to judge. I don't know what obstacles he has faced in life, but I am sure he will go down as a legend in baseball, with all of his labels.

I know! Do you know how many middle-aged women I see at my job (as customers) that have nose piercings (though it's usually just a little stud)? Ten years ago a nose piercing would've been quite, eh, radical but now it seems it's no big deal. Personally I think it's a good thing. We don't need a country/workforce of drones. image
