With regard to 62 Topps, here are some real head scratchers.

These were from a recent submission, on the heels of a prior submission where I had pretty good luck with 62's. I was stunned at these results. Not one 9 out of the bunch, which is ridiculous. You can nitpick some of the cards, but the end all be all is the Gibbs card. There is NOTHING that prevents this card from being in a 9 holder. Absolutely nothing, except the fact that the son of Stevie Wonder apparently graded it.

I've heard from more than one major dealer that PSA has no idea what they're doing with 55 Bowmans, 62 Topps, and 71 Topps.

Just for giggles I added the Maynard rookie, which was in the same submission. I actually laughed out loud when I saw that one.

    My exact immediate thoughts.

    Ron,

Quite clearly each card has distracting clarity and detracting 50/50 centering. Those are some absolute gems.

Are they supposed to be doing something different with these cards than cards from all the other years?

T/B centering on the Gibbs is within the measurements.

Then perhaps it's the slight left to right tilt? Still a beautiful group of 1962's.

I agree. Without having measured, it does appear to be within the 65/35 limit. I repeat...those are some very beautiful cards.

    Nick -

You could be right on that one. If it's anything, it would be that. I may measure the side to side centering later, to see.

No. But according to some, they're excessively harsh on them. I don't know about 55 Bowmans or 71 Topps, I don't collect those years.

Grades look fine to me, the two 8.5's could be 9's on any day though.
Even with the distracting print dot (Pierce)

The Gibbs as mentioned is OC and tilted.

    Nice run of cards.

They are harsher on them. I've probably graded 1,000 62's over the years - I've had 4 9's.

Ron's cards are nice - I could see Drake as a 9, but the 8.5s look consistent with what I've seen. Gibbs should be an 8.5 as well.

I just sent in another 100 62's Wednesday. I should have scanned some for Raw Card Saturday. Anyway, they are the nicest run I've had in a few years. If they don't yield a 9 or two I'd be surprised. That said, they seem to have a couple of guys who grade properly and a couple who don't - they are incongruent, which is scary.

Yes, 55 Bowman, 62 Topps and especially 71 topps are held to a higher standard. They as in PSA and SGC are all over the board on these issues. Also, because of this you are taking a huge chance when you crack and resubmit. In regards to trimming they are all over the board on these issues too. Also, these issues are the most recolored of the post war issues. In regards to the Maynard card-today it's a 8, tomorrow it's a 8.5, and the next day it's a 9. The small rough cut going down to the bottom right corner leads to 6-9 grades. The rough cut is clearly an interpretation of the grader as to what grade to assign. I personally like a minor roughness to a card; I believe it adds to the authenticity of the card. On 71 topps, if you get a very strict grader you could get a ton of 7's on NM-MT cards. I believe alot of 71's are reviewable. I have many stars that I believe are high end 8's. I just haven't sent them in for review yet. On the centering of Ron's cards==if we are grading them as 10's I would not accept the centering on a couple of those; but we are talking about PSA 9 and I believe they all meet the standard in regards to centering. I believe the Scheffing and Gibbs could have gotten a 9. The Maynard should have gotten an 8.5 at the least. I actually don't like the Drake's bottom edge. It looks suspicious. JMO.

  • It looks like there are some printing dots along the bottom on the Maynard but it still is a great looking card.

The Scheffing ang Gibbs look like 9s to me. They are also very tough on '63 Topps baseball as well.

So you know, I would gladly kick any one of you guys in the junk for that Gibbs.

    That's a beauty.
