Help! How can I stop ripping and start a pack collection?

Here I go again. Every time I buy packs from one of the group rips I have every intention of keeping one or two unopened and getting a pack collection going. So far, in all the rips, I've only been able to put away one pack of 79 baseball.

Now I have 5 packs of 78 football.

Once I start ripping I can't stop. How can I stash one of these packs?????

Put them in a box and don't open the box for a day or two. If the urge to rip has passed then you can collect, otherwise you may as well rip because it's gonna happen sooner or later. There is no shame in being a rip-freak.

Unless you have someone else sock it away for you, you're doomed.

Have them bronzed. They're harder to get into.

Actually, slabbing one of each in your collection might be a good start.

Buy a wax tray. They're too pretty to bust.

Do what I did; I started my pack collection once I got the complete sets. If you already got all the cards; what's the point of opening the pack?

Seal it inside one of your house walls and let your great great grandchildren find it and advertise it on ebay. You know, just like all of those terrilbly fortunate ebayers that found all of those T206 Wagners that their relatives left for them to find.

Exactly what I was going to say. Buy a nice set first.

Agreed with Estil as well- once I complete the set I get a pack to go with it. Opening a pack (especially a pre '70 one) is a losing proposition virtually all of the time.
Having a nice display of them works as well- you just don't want a hole in the run.
Sidepocket- who is in the picture in your avatar? It looks like it was taken at Off the Wall or Backdoor, but I can't see it well enough to id the surfer.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

I like this one best -

"I hide the extra pack and then pray I can find it again. "

I've tried waiting a few days and it didn't work. I'm too random with my purchases to ever complete a set.

Probably just doomed as Nam suggested.

I'm going to rip 4 packs right now and see if I can hold off on one-

Grif, the avatar surfer is unknown to me, I only know I want to be wherever he is.

  • I always order a box or two of 1986 Topps baseball. When I get down to the packs I want to save, then I open the 86 box. By the time I get done, I am so bored that I do not feel like opening the good packs. I managed to save one pack of every group break we have had accept the 80-81 basketball.

Buy one of the graded Gem Mint 10 Packs. It will take too much effort to get in there and if you think about how much dough you blew to get it, you wont want to open it
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY
  • Don't.

Just buy inexpensive stuff to rip.

I just got five boxes of 1981 Fleer Star Stickers for $60 on Ebay to satisfy my craving...there's lot's of cool, but inexpensive stuff from the 80's that is fun to rip and dirt cheap....stuff like Donruss Action All-Stars, Fleer Star Stickers, Topps 5x7's, Topps Bigs, etc.

No need to buy expensive stuff just because you want something to rip....

It's tough not to rip when the cards are "calling you" to bust them. LOL

I thought I'd collect cellos a few months back so I bought graded topps baseball 75, 77,78,and79. Then I decided to buy a rack(still need a 75) and a wax each for those years, then I got side tracked and bought some other stuff. I think now I'm gonna sell off the graded cellos, rip the racks and save some of the wax, of course this will change by 5:00pm today as I should have my BBCE package in-hand by then. Have I ever mentioned how my collection lacks focus?
  • I too have a lack of focus with my collection. I have a rather large assortment of random unopened wax. However, that collection tends to get smaller every day that I do not receive a little yellow envelope or big brown box in the mail.
  • That's hilarious. I have the same problem. I think I have it real bad. I found a Stan Musial small hardcover book with a pack of crappy Donruss packaged with the book. Yup, I could not help myself and opened the pack knowing damn well that it was a garbage issue and that I would find nothing. HELP!!!!!
