Help removing wax from surface

I was looking over my cards getting ready to see what I will send in for grading. I came across my OPC lemieux rc. As I was inspecting it I noticed that their is a wax buildup on a few spots on the surface of the card. Is there a way to carefully remove this wax without damaging or altering the surface.

I recall someone stating once to use a womens nylon. I wanted to make sure before trying anything that could possibly damage the card. Even though this card is OC it remains one of my favorite cards and makes me sick to my stomach that I have found this residue. I've posted a pic and you can see it on the left and right sides in the center of the card.

GENTLY with a nylon should help.

As is, it is pretty bad. Likely to get a ST Q.

    A stain qualifier. Here's PSA's definition...

In some cases, a card will be designated with a qualifier. A "qualified" card is a card that meets all the criteria for a particular grade, but fails the standard in one area. For example, a card which exhibits all the qualities of a NM-MT 8, but is 90/10 centered left to right, will receive a grade of NM-MT 8oc. The "OC" stands for off-center. Here is a brief list of qualifiers: OC (Off-center), ST (stain), PD (Print Defect), OF (Out of Focus), and MK (Marks).

Yup, a woman's nylon sock works PERFECT. Takes off ALL the wax and is non abrasive. Wipes it right off.

just don't use men's nylons, they give off an undesired effect
  • Barrel cleaners from paintball kits will also work well.

Is that a scratch to the far right of his shoulder or is it wax?

And I agree with others, nylons do work well, just not too agressive. Lay the card on a hard flat surface as you rub. Good luck and let us know the results.

OK, I can help you with this. Take two Q-tips. Dip one in cottage cheese and spread on the stain, and let dry. Take the other Q-tip and dip it in a carbonated beverage- preferrably A&W Root Beer; on second thought, make it Hires Root Beer. Then freeze that cue tip for 45 minutes, remove from freezer and soak in gin. Then you rub the gin/root beer soaked Q-Tip over the dried cottage cheese. Now here's where it gets tricky- you're going to take some rosemary and grind it down to a powder. Press therosemary powder over the gluey area and place a heavy book on top and let sit for eaxactly 26 days. After 26 days are up, removed the book and rosemary powders and gently rub stained area with rubbing alcohol. That should do the trick.

  • If you want a serious answer similar to Lee's, get a Q-tip and spray Febreeze on the tip. Rub the wax gently and it will dry and break up. Then it wipes right off. Plus, it makes the card smell better. A friend told me this because of my stinky 84 Topps cards I just busted.

Nylons and soft cheesecloth works best. Toilet paper can be used in a crunch (and is suggested after a pinch, for that matter). Just be firm and be cautious when working near the corners and edges. It should come off easily, but may smear initially, but don't be alarmed...the smear will come off, too.

I used a nylon and it removed atleast 80% of the wax. I don't want to over do it and damage the surface. Thanks for the help. I will take another scan when i am done.
