Ruth Autographed ball - value?

A friend has a ball autographed by Babe Ruth and Tris Speaker. I have not seen it but I believe he said the Ruth was personalized to someone. If he spends the money for PSA authentication what might it be worth? Thanks.

really depends on condition of ball and strength of signature. hard to estimate without knowing this info

It would be worth more if it didnt have Speaker on it, but still very nice.

Do you have any pics of it?

Is it a red and blue stitched ball?

You might want to do a completed eBay auction search to see what others have sold for.

Sounds sweet , can't wait to see a few pics of that one !

I held the ball today and photographed it. Will post tonight when I get home (west coast time). Will be curious what you experts have to say. Stiching is red and black on it.

I would think if someone had an authentic Ruth ball they would sell it through one of the major auction houses, JMO.

I see a lot of Red and Black stitched baseballs now , But I only know of one company that made baseballs with black and red stitching back in the day , JC- Higgins in 34 made Red and black stitched baseballs , Basically Sears I guess .

    Can't wait to see it

Oh ya, assuming it's real it was really cool to hold the ball. I actually showed to one of the others in my office who is a pick sports fan. The ball has some sort of smudge (or pre-printed writing?) under the Ruth signature. Another side appears to say Spalding. Another side says something but I can't ready it. Sorry the photos are not better. Anyway, I will give my friend this link so be kind if you thinks it's real, fake, estimate of value, where you would sell it, whatever.... He is not a sports memoriabillia guy so try to explain your reasoning. Thanks guys!

    Wow !
Nice piece , there are only a couple of things hurting it though .

It is definitely authentic Number one .

At least the Ruth is , that I am certain of .

If it were single signed and if it signed by Ruth on the sweet spot and on an official major league baseball it could be worth a ton in that particular condition .

I would estimate he could get over 6 K for that baseball after is authenticated By PSA or JSA .

    He wants to sell ?

The personalized baseballs tend to not be as sought though , I have seen a few sit at auction with no bids breaking the reserve of like 5 K in similar condition , but I think if he rode it out he could probably get around 6 I guess .

You would think with those great vintage names it would be worth a fortune , but condition , the type of baseball and the personalization hurt it a litle bit , unless you could get someone named Jack
Mc Quary to buy it image

Now that would be something !

Thanks TNT. I do not think he wants to sell it right now. However, your info is great. I will make sure he reads the link! Thanks.
  • Agree with TNT on basically all fronts. Both autographs are in very nice condition, but it's too bad they weren't switched around. Speaker single-signed balls go anywhere from $1,000-$3,000 and Ruth balls are all over the place depending on all the factors mentioned. Here's a database of all auction prices through past 2.5 years that might help you Auction database. I'm also guessing around $6,000 for this ball, but both sigs are so nice I wouldn't be shocked if it went beyond that. I think your friend would be best served in a major auction house.

Both sigs are good. The ball will display very well. Value is in the eye of the beholder, as a collector I'd be happy to have that ball in my collection. As a speculator, which is what the majority of the buyers at the high end prices are, I'm going to be interested in paying less for the ball because of the personalization.

A true autograph collector does not care about personalization. To me it adds character to a signature, and it also offers more evidence on which to authenticate the signature.

A little Google-ing finds a Jack McQuary born in Tacoma WA in 1920, who played college football at UC Berkeley in the 1940s and one pro game for the Los Angeles Dons in 1946.

    Thanks guys.

That's interesting MooseDog about Mr. McQuary (the one who the ball was autographed to) as the ball does reside here in Northern California so certainly could be the guy who the ball was autographed to.

As always the contributors on these boards are top notch. Thanks.

    It's worth exactly $28.

    It's worth exactly $28.

... but you will give him $29 or $30 because you are such a nice guy!? As long as he doesn't try to ship it to you in a PWE!?
