Randy Johnson - a bad rap - deserved?

Sure, he should probably hang it up...
Sure, he doesn't get along with the media, or his fans for that fact...
Sure, he isn't the cutest creature....

But is anyone else with me that thinks he doesn't get enough credit for his career?

2nd on the all time strikeout list behind only Nolan Ryan.
HOF monitor has his stats as being the 4th best in the history of the game, above the likes of Maddux, Nolan Ryan, Bob Gibson TOm Seaver, etc...

I am not going to suggest the HOF monitor stats are the best indication, but it certainly tells a story, and if he's not in the top 4, he's definetely in the top 20 ALL time, which is nothing to sneeze at.

Anyone have anything good to say about Randy? I am sure there will be plenty who have bad things to say, but are there any Randy Johnson fans out
there besides me? TO me it is sad to see his career ending the way it is. I hope he can either turn things around in the second half or some how make
a nice exit for himself.

Randy Johnson was an absolutely dominanting pitcher. He should be a first ballot HOF'er. He was surly and all that, but his numbers don't lie. I would rank him Top 10 of all-time.
  • he really needs to hang it up though; its just embarassing these days.

He so desperately wants to get to 300 wins -- that will keep him going.
  • Thing is he doesn't need 300 wins for the HOF. Maybe because Arizona did so hot last year he thought they'd contend again this year?

He is fast becoming the Steve Carlton of the 21st Century. A pitcher with a great career who just didn't know when to quit and winds up being remembered as such.

I think that may be partially why he is doing so bad, that he is over trying? He's probably wound up inside, and you have seen how he can
get when he is wound up.

Well, I sure hope he has a better 2nd half!

You can put a AAA team in the NL West and they'll contend this year.....

I started following Randy when he was being tutored by Nolan Ryan. I could see the improvement in his stats but with him in Seattle and me in PA I didn't see him pitch much.

Has to be a lot of stress on your body to be 6'10 and 225. Add the stress of pitching and it's no great shock that he's breaking down.

Maybe it's time for him to retire after this year but I'd like to see him hang on and get to 300 if it doesn't hurt his team. You hate seeing guys fall just short of milestones.

I thought you were going to say something about him not paying child support. I think that was in the news about a year ago. He is basically a 5-6 inning pitcher with about 5 plus era. On certain teams with great bullpens he would fit in. When you can't last more than 5 innings it is time to hang the shoes up.

I played against Randy Johnson (among many other future Major Leaguers) back in the early 1980s. He was from the Walnut Creek area in the Bay Area (east side). He was tough to see with his sidearm and tall delivery. The ball comes from a slot not ever seen and very tough to adjust to. I am a Lefty and I still remember not wanting to dig in against him. ..... Especially with the bad lights we had in our stadium. He was wild and you could see it even then.

He was easily one of the top 5 intimidation pitchers I faced in the HS/College/Am Legion level mainly because I always remembered him even though his name is common. I knew Bonds well because of his dad, but Johnson was remembered years later because he was basically a freak of a pitcher back then (plus we were both drafted by Montreal in 1985). Not often do you face a guy as big as a center in basketball on the mound image.
