Is Beckett Baseball Card Monthly still around??

I used to read this every month as a kid, but I haven't seen one in over 12 years probably. Is this still published? I'd like to see the "book" price of my signed rookies (they are not for sale, just interested in what they book at). I get SMR but it's for graded cards, does Beckett still put out the ones for ungraded, and do they include 1952 on up in every issue??

  • It is now Beckett Sports card monthly or something like that. Then they produce the quarterly issues in the different sports.

Unfortunately, while Beckett (or BBCM for short) was the go-to magazine/price guide at virtually all hobby dealers in the 80s/90s, they really jumped the shark starting in the early 2000s. I happen to own a complete run from 1988-96 as well as the two "millenium" issues (Dec 1999/Jan 2000; oddly though they barely mention the new millenium at all!) and I personally would love to extend it to at least 1999 and as far back as at least 1987 as well as start a good Beckett Football (and possibly Basketball) run. In the years I mentioned (especially early to mid 90s) it was a fantastic magazine.

Bottom line, you're not missing anything in today's Beckett. image

  • Actually Becketts graded card investor beats SMR like a red headed stepchild.

I used to love going to the local card shop and picking up the newest edition of Beckett.
I happen to have Football, Basketball and Hockeys first issues.

I used to subscribe along with Tuff Stuff and SCD.

Tuff Stuff as we knew it seems to have gone by the wayside - it's really now just a monthly price guide and SCD is so thin you can see thru it!

Ebay, cyberspace and changing trends in the hobby has affected all these publications.

I used to get excited about receving these pubs - since in 1989 - there wasn't an internet and this was the major form of communication along with the card shop and show.

I guess we're just gonna have to dance with the partner we came with.

Ah, the odlen days- when all Beckett had to do was print something and it became automatically true. "The 1993 Upper Deck Triple Corwn Contenders are hot? I gotta get me some of them."

They have combined Beckett Baseball, Basketball, Football monthly and all the other sports into a bi monthly mag. Basically a copy of Tuff Stuff. Pricing is terrible since they mostly focus on current releases, plus i dont collect Hockey, Football or Racing. They still offer the quarterly editions seperately which is what I am going to chang to.

I remember rushing to the local card shop to pick up the newest copy to see all the arrows going up .....

And then the disappointment of the dreaded "down arrow".

To think I actually kept an inventory spreadsheet with my cards and prices on it, and then took the time each month to update the prices when the new Beckett came out.

Another thing I remember is how the size of the font slowly decreased in size over the years from "readable" to "get-a-magnifying glass".

I picked up one of the $9.99 copies a month ago and was surprised that the pricing was much closer to reality than SMR, especially the vintage.

  • The quarterly issues are not bad and have alot of sets that would not be in a price guide otherwise.

I kept a few copies of Beckett from the past--my favorite though is the "large" issue cover of Tuff Stuff of the fight that never happened...Any guesses as to who they are?? I have it framed and matted.

    CDsNtus was drinikng last ngiht.
  • I was drinking last night too so please ignore any meassages from me last night. Wait, everyone ignores my messages anyway.

I love the the bi-monthly Becketts now. I also love how dead HOF'ers occassionally go down in value. Are they having a bad season?

Did you know as far back as 1992 people were writing letters to Beckett (then called Readers Write) complaining about how there's too many products and that all the high priced preminum cards and inserts were driving kids out of the hobby? I guess somethings never really change, eh?
