Civil War stuff is hot too, almost as hot as 19th Century baseball at times. It would be a nice item if its signed by him. The one thing to remember is they are not rare or unique, many of the famous people from the 1860-70s has their own CDV's made up and they used them as sort of a business cards they handed out to friends, etc. So their is a good chance the sigs are authentic.
You may want to go on a good Civil War message board and ask around there for more info on the autograph, scarcity of the particular CDV etc..
If you google "Doubleday CDV" you will see many of them for sale, sold, on eBay, etc. and I saw at least 4 different designs in a quick look. One that brought $1000+ at REA, yet another one of different design brought only $464. If yours is signed Im sure it will be worth far more.
PS I think I may have seen the one you are referring to (trimmed at top), at first glance I though they may be stamped signatures like many of the Buffalo Bill CDV's and Cabinet cards, but looking closer they are not stamped. Again googling "doubleday autograph" and hitting "images" you will see that his authentic signature has all the characteristics of the 2 on the CDV........ Looks good to me but Im no expert on his signature or how rare it is.

Both are good guys and might be willing to give it a quick look for you, there names are John Reznikoff and Bob Eaton, they are also historical authenticators with PSA/DNA. If you want to mention that Mike Navarro from Texas said that they might help you and recommended them, it might give you a little bit better chance of having them at least look.
Good luck!!
Mike
I have gone ahead and placed an absentee bid and if I win, I'll give them a shout.
BTW, Mike , I'm also in Texas just outside of Dallas. Where are you and what do you collect?
