Great Stat: Gregg Jefferies made more money than Don Mattingly...

33million to 29million.

I know he came in 3 years later but still... thought it was interesting.

The face of the richest franchise in sports for a decade...

That's an interesting fact, but the year differences were significant enough that allowed Jeffries to make more money. Jeffries played in the bigs from 1987 to 2000 and Mattingly played in the bigs from 1982- 1995 . The average salaries in baseball had nearly doubled from 1982 to 1987 and the highest salary in 1995 went from just over 9M a year to over 15M a year in 2000. So I believe the difference in salaries in 1995 to 2000 were significant enough to allow Jeffries a big advantage over Mattingly even though Mattingly was a top player during his years. Also, did Mattingly really ever try the free agent market or did he want to stay in pin stripes?

Jefferies was a first round bonus baby. Just out of High School he was Minor League Player of the Year in 1986 and 1987. Very High expectations.

Brought to the bigs with the Mets at only 19. He came from same high school as Barry Bonds (I played against both of them, and with Jefferies in Japan).

Jefferies and Matt Williams were the best 2 players I ever played against/with.

He played 14 seasons, Im not surprised they add up to be more $$ ....
  • If I am not mistaken, I believe Mattingly could have been a free agent in 1992 but wanted to stay a Yankee. Of course Steinbrenner screwed him because he knew Don was passionate about retiring a Yankee. Next to Dale Murphy, Mattingly has always been one of my favorite players becuase of his class and professionalism. On a different note, was sorting some cards last night and found (20) 1988 Donruss Greg Jeffries rookies. I may put them on eBay and reitire.

Lee, I think I have everyone beat. I've been on Workers Comp since April and the company as of last week is paying me less than I could make working at McDonalds if I worked part time there. image
  • Try being a residential real estate appraiser, at least last week. Could have used some workers comp.

I think you guys missed the point of this thread...

    1) I know WHY gregg jefferies made more money.. But just the idea that the pride of the yankees for a decade made less money then a "bust"(although i would argue) for the mets...

    2) In order for you to make less money than Lee you would have to LOSE more than he did.

Does anyone remember Jefferies when he came back from the injury and his muscles were gigantic? It looked like he gained 50 lbs of muscle. It has always made me wonder about him. Did someone else find this shocking.

Jefferies was with the Tigers at the end, so I had the good fortune to boo him for all newspaper route money I wasted on his rookies. I don't think he was on the roids, because he still has no power.

His career numbers weren't that bad, just didn't justify a $20 1988 Fleer RC. I remember everyone think that it would go to $50-$100. If that happened, we could pay off the national debt.

Now I need to find a way to boo Todd Van Poppel.

Shows how incompetent Detroit management was for so long that Jeffries got a $2M raise after a .200/6HR/18RBI season. Unreal.

    Tabe

still could have been on roids. look at armando rios of the giants/pirates. he was connected to roids in the balco case. he didnt hit jack for either team.

i entered the hobby post jeffries.

i did get into the nigel wilson hype, if you can believe that.

I am surprised he retired at 32. I figured he would stick around for a few years stealing money as a pinch hitter like Pat Tabler.

Are there not another 1,500 or so people that did not get to the money round?

Hang in there bigred, I would be ok if my employer actually paid me full workers comp, but they want to drag it out and not pay crap.

The raise that he got was probably based off of how the money was rewarded in the contract (upfront, backloaded, even, etc.) rather than on production.

Didn't Chuck Bednarik whine about all the money the current NFL guys are making. It's not just inflation eitherimage lol It would suck to see some youngster making millions more than you 30 years from now.
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!

If you take into account the time value of money, Mattingly had a lot more by then end of 2000 than Jefferies did.
Successful transactions with: vintagetoppsguy, packman, barndog, Big80s, MurphDawg, BrackAttack, mealeworm, Publius, Whiteshoes, bigredone, rube26105, ledsters, reelinintheyears, digicat, themetalsign, OSClabs, 1420sports, bighurt2000, MeteoriteGuy, lsutigers1973, skier07, Machodoc, gameusedhoop, tennesseebanker, Downtown1974, CGeorge, Salinas, corvette1340, lbcoach20, initialD, IJustLoveCards, TedSimmonsFan, Goldlabels, Lothar52, bigred1, Bosox1976, itzagoner, svtPONY95
  • Jeffries had a better agent
    It's not what your worth
It's what your agent can get teams to pay for you
    Look at Barry Zito
He wasn't worth what $$ he is getting
    But that;s another story

  • Whom did you play for that you got to play against the two of them?
