Holy Mother of . . .

This is absolutely an insane price . . .

I'm still in a state of shock!

I guess there's still a bit of disposable income out there!

That's Dmirti Young's buyer... Bailey's been Dmitri's contact for awhile.

That's cool. I was noticing he's certainly in the Rookie card market. Very nice purchase.

    Dmitri Young's 2008 salary is $5,000,000

I think he can afford it...

Dmitri used to buy under his own ID years ago. Sold him a bunch of RC's in '02-'03. I remember he was buying a ton of wax and sealed product just before his personal ID went dormant.

I did a Google search and came up with this: Corey Bailey ( Phillip Cory Bailey ) was a pitcher on the Cardinals the same time as Young was playing there. Maybe he is Young's buyer? I;m sure it's a reach, but I'm throwing this out there.

My brother played college baseball with Dimitri's cousin, whose name was George Bailey (no jokes - didn't look anything like the guy in the movie). I would guess the buyer is a relative.

You should have stopped right there. Phillip Bailey should be remembered for EW&F (he and Maurice White shared vocals, PB sang the high parts).
  • His buyer's name is Dave Bailey, he used to post on here several years ago IIRC

Why are you so surprised? Gorgeous 9 of the real HR king.

Guys were balking about the centering on this card a week or so ago when the auction started. I stated then that it would clear $20k. $28k is a little higher than I exptected, I figured $22-25k. Others were insisting it was a $10-15k card. Not a chance. If anyone wanted to sell theirs for that, I'd find the money to buy it. image

Just a bit surprised that it's a good 10-12G's over any previous closed price (PSA or otherwise) and most of those included house juice.
  • If the buyer is indeed Dmitri Young, then he's probably not too price sensitive. He doesn't care if he pays a little too much for something....he juust wants it.

This is why you see so many "insane" prices at auction houses. Many of their buyers are so filthy rich that they don't really care what an item's supposedly books for....if they want it, they'll pay whatever it takes to get it.

I agree it's a great looking card, but aren't the 54's suppose to have fuzz edges on the left and the right?

Not all 54s have the fuzz or rough cut, I did own quite a few 54s back in the early 90s that had nice borders like this Aaron. Mine though were just commons that I ended up selling long before I heard of card grading!!image
  • superb card.
alas, i wish i had some high priced cards to sell to a millionaire.

the psa 9 that sold on ebay in march was $28k
  • So now the question is...what does he get on a crack & sub to PSA? Think it's a 10?

Do you think Dmitri Young really cares? Given that he earns $5 million a year, I doubt he plays the crack & resubmit game.....

Thanks Josh. My bad. I did a quick scan of VCP, but only looked at the last closed auctions. I stand corrected.

They must be jumping for joy in Parsippany, though. If they want, they can use this to compare realized prices. Add this to the recent Ruth, and they've got a nice campaign they could run. Too bad their modern stuff doesn't sell anywhere near their competitors.
