Am I a jerk for asking why it cost so much to ship a graded pack?

Does anyone else think it's a lot to charge $7.28 to ship a graded pack? By his response it sounds like he trying to get some of his grading fees back by adding it into the shipping cost.

ebay link

I asked the seller if there was a way he could ship it cheaper here was his response:

Shipping is higher on graded packs due to increased costs involved. Sorry about that. But it costs $14+ to get packs graded.

I felt like e-mailing him back saying I don't really care how much it cost to grade the pack since it's already graded. Plus I know for a fact the pack could be shipped via paypal/usps around $2.25.

It's alot but the seller clearly stated it from the beginning. You have to take that into account when you bid IMO.

I agree but the pack is not even worth his openning bid yet alone his crazy shipping price. I just hate when sellers jack around the shipping price, just start the auction out at a higher price and charge real shipping rates.

Don't forget...insurance is required on the auction...so he's probably going to charge around $10 shipping/handling/insurance for a pack with no bids at $6.99.

I'm sure another pack will pop up from a more reasonable seller.

That does seem high to me, too, but don't forget, bbcexhange charges $8 to ship a graded pack, too.

Actually, he'll likely charge $1.65 but buy the insurance through Auctiva for $1.20 for the extra $.45 kick in the shorts.

Just got a pack from them and it was about $6.25, it was professionally packed, shipped and insured correctly. That was for a $50 pack not some less than $10 auction for a psa 7 83 Topps pack!

    Sorry again just grummpy tonight

I'm surprised a seller would even bother to insure a pack like this one. The winning bid will probably be less than the shipping cost on this pack.

They overcharge shipping and have a lower sell price to circumvent ebay fees.

you would think ebay would have a problem with that... it would seem ebay would be losing money that should be theirs... in this case I say ebay should get the money!

Shipping that pack Priority, Insured, with Delivery Confirmation
would cost $7.20 at USPS rates.

First-Class is a couple dollars cheaper, with the same add-ons.

The seller's "handling fee" - permitted by EBAY - is not excessive, under the rules.

MANY buyers simply adjust their bids accordingly.

What's wrong with self-insuring? That's why I do. It's easier than dealing with the post office. If a package is lost I pay. It's really simple.

    //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

It is a GOOD solution. I end up with thousands of bucks in a jar, at XMAS time.

I use USPS-insurance for many items, but mostly I handle the risk.

    The only caveat:

It is NOT lawful to collect an ala carte fee for insurance, IF you are going to "self-insure."

    The EBAY-TOS acceptable seller-TOS/lingo is:

"Insured Shipping with Delivery Confirmation Is $X.XX"

    ........

Whatever fee you are adding for insurance MUST be burried in the $X.XX.

If an ala carte fee is listed, that fee MUST be conveyed to a LICENSED third-party
insurer AT THE TIME the freight document is prepared. Such a collected fee
CANNOT lawfully be used to fund a previously purchased "blanket policy," OR to
    fund "self-insurance."

You can collect and keep the money, you simply can't invoice for the
"service" on an ala carte basis.

    The 4SC model is correct.

I agree it would cost that much but why do all that for a pack that is not even worth the opening bid price? For a $6.99 pack that all seems very excessive... that's why I originally e-mailed him asking him if there was a way to ship cheaper... this pack could be shipped for $2.25 with d/c.
