GEAUX TIGERS!!!

OT, sorry. My Tigers baseball team scored 3 touchdowns last night.

"The Tigers smashed UC Irvine with 24 hits and seven home runs for a 21-7 victory Monday night to reach the College World Series in Omaha, Neb., for the first time since 2004."

Saw that. Awesome. Reminds me of the teams in the 90s. Did you go to LSU? I attended grad school there from 1994 - 1999. Geaux Tigers is right!

I'm dating a girl that went to LSU. Walked into a bar and grill Sunday afternoon at the top of the 9th. She gave me a glaring look when I said, "Hey, they play all 9 innings for a reason. You never know what could happen."

+1 for me being optimistic and getting mucho brownie points after the come back.

-1 for me saying last night (in a joking tone), "Sure hope they save some of this firepower for next round."

Yeah, that didn't go over too well.. D'oh..

Anyway, can someone give me a cliff note's version of "gorilla ball", please? She used the term several times but didn't know the real orgins.

Class of '96ish. Was supposed to be '95 but liquor is readily available in Baton Rouge if you look like you are over the age of 15.

Great offensive effort last night. They just couldn't let the last game in Alex Box be a loss. I was really pulling for AZ St. to win last night, because that would be such a historic field. Florida St, Miami, Rice, LSU, Stanford, UNC, Georgia, and....Fresno ST?! The first seven make up a majority of the teams you think of when you think of college baseball in the past 20 years (although UGA has only been top notch for the past 5 or so).

Very happy to see some college baseball talked about on this board.

BTW...I'll be up in Baton Rouge on a campus visit of LSU in a few weeks. It'll be the first stop of my trip to out of state schools that also includes Auburn (maybe 'bama as well), UGA and Clemson.

LSU would have won the Saturday game, if not for that horrible call on the hidden ball trick by the 2B umpire. They had bases loaded with the top of the order coming up, and the UCI pitcher was starting to struggle. The Tigers actually won the series by continuing to swing the bat on Saturday, and forcing UCI to use their bullpen.

    Stown,
"Gorilla Ball" came about in the late '90s. LSU won many games in a similar fashion to Monday night, just bashing home run after home run after home run. Eddy Furniss hit 26 homers in '96, Brandon Larson hit 40 in 1997, Brad Cresse hit 30 in 2000. The team hit 188 home runs in 1997 (in 70 games!!!) In 2001, the NCAA changed the regulations on bat size/composition, and HR numbers dropped NCAA-wide. But, yes, those games at The Box in the late 90s were un-freaking-believable.

Since one of America's great historical parks is closing, here's a neat item:

In 1994 LSU did a "throwback game" against rival Tulane. Tickets were a dollar, Cokes and hot dogs a quarter. I was still in high school. I managed to get a ticket outside of the gate, and sat next to some old man and talked baseball. Demand was so great that the had people sitting 3 deep along both foul lines, on the field.

This is the program from the game.

Yeah that's probably what we'll be doing. We don't have our schedule set just yet, but it will probably be towards the end of this month or in early July. I'm hoping that I like the area and campus, because the school offers the other stuff that I want in a school like big sports, my intended major plus my grades are good enough that it'd be cheaper going there than staying in state and going to a Florida school because of scholarships.

That gorilla ball was absolutely amazing. My dad got me started on college baseball in the late 90s so that was some of the first college baseball I ever saw. Could you imagine some of these guys today with the -5 bats? Alonso (Miami), Posey (FSU), Wallace (ASU), Clark (LSU) would all have at least 30 HRs at this point.
  • Been to the College World Series in Omaha twice. A must for any sports fan. Unreal atmosphere.

If my college ever makes it, I'll have my tickets booked in a heartbeat. Even if they don't though, I'll still probably go a few times image. My dad's friend goes every year no matter what teams are playing.

    Goot,

Eat here when you go. It's immediately next to campus. Have the blackened alligator as an appetizer.

    The Chimes

As a sports fan, you'll appreciate this, as well. Located on campus. Takes about 30 minutes to an hour to browse through.

    Andonie Museum

If you know how long you'll be in town for, I can make some other recommendations.

Did you see Polk get pissed over the hiring of Cohen at Miss. State?

I'll for sure keep those places in mind when visiting campus, thanks for the help. We'll probably be in town for basically a day. In town for the day, spend the night in the area, and then leave for the next place (probably Auburn) in the morning. We kinda have to squeeze it into a time period so my dad takes the least work time off possible.
  • One last comment on this game. UC Irvine's coach said (paraphrasing of course) when they visited Georgia everyone was so polite and friendly. They came to Louisiana and everyone here was rude and hostile and needed to realize that the Civil War was over. There is a photo on numerous Tiger fan sites showing a guy at the third game massacre holding a sign that says "Too bad the Civil War wasn't best 2 out of 3".

Nah, no need to, the South already won.

It's a common misconception and continues to be a constant conspiracy by the man to keep us down.

I didn't even realize your misquote until you mentioned it. I just found it on a college baseball message board and found it pretty funny.
