1993 SP Baseball wax box....worth ripping?

Anyone ever open this stuff? Are the odds good on hitting a Jeter or multiple Jeters? The box looks to be in good shape so possibly hit a Jeter to grade? Or just sell the box on ebay for $210-$215?

If I were you, I would sell it to me for about $175.

I would sell the box. It would take four PSA 8's to make as much as the box would go for. If you get lucky and pull a nine that would go for about $300 but the odds are pretty slim. Either way good luck and if you open it do a live rip!

I've never opened up this product, but the Jeter's considered to be condition sensative since the foil on the card tends to chip and scratch very easily.

The breakdown of grades given out to the foil cards in this set is telling...
76% of all foil cards from this set submitted for grading has gotten 8s.
Only 6% got PSA 9s or 10s.

12 cards per pack, 24 packs per box (288 cards total).

You'd be taking a $210 gamble on slim odds if you opened it.

The break stinks! I broke 6 boxes many moons ago (at prices significantly higher than they are now) and pulled 4 Jeters. I pulled one PSA 9 and 3 PSA 8's. Cracked the nicest PSA 8 and got it into an SGC 92 (8.5). I believe the highest foil counts were Scott Ruffcorn and Johnny Damon at 8 each. Ended up that the collation would've allowed me to complete only 2 sets!

I did have much better success with '94 SP.

I busted the wax when it was first out. The cards stick together VERY often. The chance of a PSA 9 is very low because of this alone. I think max value is in the sealed box.

I opened three boxes a few years ago and got two Jeter's. Both very nice but came back PSA8. As is, a loss of about $400...

I would still open them if I had one box to try for that impossible PSA 10, but it is not the shrewd financial move.

I have opened over 100 boxes.

You can pull anywhere from 0-3 jeter's per box. I would say 80% of the time you pull an 8 with 10% chance of 9 and 10% of lower then 8.
Unless you have customers buying common 10s you will lose money most of the time. the rookies hardly ever come out clean but a 10 on damon or manny would also bring a few bucks.

Overall I would say if you are opening just for the jeter, sell the box to me for $200.00 and save the ebay fees.

I ordered a box of these from an eBay store a few years back and got (what I thought was) a high-end Jeter card. The box was full of wonderful condition cards. Lots of great cards to be had, but the only one worth keeping is the D.J. I'd hold the box for a while if I could, his card values seem to have held pretty steady, and really, where else are they going to go? He's way too popular to take a swift dive (famous last words, I know). One thing that ruined the box for me is I sent the Jeter, after much inspection and it came back a 5 and I STILL can't see any surface wrinkle, also had a Johnny Damon from the box come back as 'not meeting size requirements'. Hold it and sell when Jeter raps out his 3,000th or even 4000th hit.
