OT: Anyone in North Carolina?

My wife and I are contemplating packing up shop and moving halfway across the country. Probably to the Raleigh area. She has an uncle just outside of Raleigh so that's the likely landing spot if we do go.

Anyone familiar with the area that might let us know what we're in for?

I was just in Raleigh for some business...nice town, I'm real familiar with Greensboro and love it. Of course summers are hot, but NC
is a great place to live.

I live just north of Charlotte, NC and it is a great place to live! I have lived from Boone, NC to Wilmington, NC and a few spots in between. My wife and I met here, moved to Atlanta, GA, then Tampa, FL. We couldn't wait to get back here and have been back for about 8 years with no intentions of going anywhere else.

We have 2 young kids. The public schools are great and the people in the area are even better. Cost of living is better than average and there are plenty of things to do. We are 2 hours from the ski slopes and 3 hours from the beach. After living across the Southeast, this was by far the easiest place to call "home."

I have heard a ton of good things about North Carolina over the years. If I had to leave California NC would be on the top of my list to consider. I have visited a few times and always found nice people. Good luck!

I live in WV, but I have family in NC and visit a lot. Just like these guys said it sure is a nice place.

Two things you're in for are heat and a brown lawn. I moved here from Indiana about 4 years ago, but really haven't explored that much of the state outside of Charlotte. I've been to Asheville a couple times and the Outer Banks... both are beautiful... but that's about it. Won't be here much longer, though. I'm moving to Cincy later this summer.

Hey Travis, I have lived in Greensboro (via Iowa as a transplanted, yet loyal Hawkeye) for 12 years and I love the Tarheel State. Yeah it gets hot and humid, yes we have been in drought status for about a year, but...you can't beat living in the center of a state where you can be in National Forests in the mountains or at the coast of an ocean within three hours either way. Lots of history, both Revolutionary and Civil War, great fishing both freshwater and oceanic, fantastic game hunting and if I'm not mistaken North Carolina was recently named as one of the greatest states for golf with tons of courses both for the hacker and for the professional (North Carolina hosts two PGA tour events) and sometimes three with Pinehurst being a regular PGA Championship site, and Tiger Woods has chosen North Carolina for his first Tiger Designed Course in the mountains. Antiques, the Arts, great concerts and tons of Minor League and Professional League sports teams not to mention the great collegiate venues make North Carolina quite attractive. As far as Raleigh, the skies the limit for housing and schools with multiple suburbs close to the heart of Raleigh (the Pyramid), great options for employment especially in the Biotechnology fields. North Carolina has a great mix of locals and transplants, although you may find that locals refer to ALL transplants as "Yankees" and may give you some grief at times. I cannot say enough great things about NC, we even have a decent amount of Sports Card shows in Raleigh, Greensboro, Hickory and Charlotte with many tables and dealers from multiple states (I assume that you are a collector of such as you posted here), but regretably the number of card shops sucks. Should you land in NC Travis, keep in touch...I set up at most of the shows and could introduce you to the "major players" in the region (again assuming that you are a sports card junkie)...Good luck!!!!!!

It's really bad here (Charlotte Area). Everyone is nice and the taxes are low. Charlotte just put in the first light rail line and we have a bunch of sports teams. I think it was the only city to see home values go up out of the top 22 cities. They are building the NASCAR Hall Of Fame in Charlotte as well. I would not send my kids to the Charlotte Mech schools though (Really) but there are plenty of other surrounding counties to pick from. You can even look in SC since it is 11 miles from Downtown Charlotte to the SC border (even cheaper taxes in SC).

I live just a little west of NC in east TN, but have family in Kannapolis, NC, not to far from Charlotte Motor Speedway, uhhh sorry, Lowes Motor Speedway.

Years ago textile and cigarettes were the sacred cows, but those days are over. It's a really nice area, but the economy in that area is totally based on racing from what they have told me.

Boone NC is a great place, I have considered moving there a few times, and at that altitude it doesn't get really hot very often.

Your in for some really nice people semi-easy commutes and alot of taxes...on everything. Raleigh has two major suburb towns, Garner and Cary. You would probably do better if you stay out of the city and county, find a smaller town within 30 miles and commute if you are going to work in the city. If your in the medical field, you want to be closer to Durham, banking and finance is Charlotte, Raleigh is...well it's...it's the Capitol !!!

I live in Halifax, Virginia on the border of NC and Va and have been to a few of the Greensboro card shows at the coisium. I love them!!!!!

I've enjoyed the Carolinas the few times I've been there, but what I've been hearing lately as well as this thread, make me want to look into going to school up there even more. I had started to look into Clemson, Wake Forest (pricey) or NC St (UNC is impossible to get into), but I may escalate that process a bit more now.

I live in Raleigh and it is a great place. It gets hot and humid a couple months out of the year but tyhe winters are mostly mild. I'm not sure about the one poster who said lots of taxes. Seems to be normal to me. Definately better than NY. You get great bang for your buck for houses. I have seen what 500K buys in other parts of the country and that same money gets what I would consider a mini mansion. Close to both the beach and the mountains. Carolina Hurricanes Hockey is growing and the best college basketball anywhere. It's always fun to take in a Durham Bulls game also about 30 minutes away. There must be something good about the place. Many people move here.
