Sweet words on Bob Gibson from Dusty Baker (circa 1970)

'Don't dig in against Bob Gibson, he'll knock you down. He'd knock down his own grandmother if she dared to challenge him. Don't stare at him, don't smile at him, don't talk to him. He doesn't like it. If you happen to hit a home run, don't run too slow, don't run too fast. If you happen to want to celebrate, get in the tunnel first. And if he hits you, don't charge the mound, because he's a Gold Glove boxer.' I'm like, 'Damn, what about my 17-game hitting streak?' That was the night it ended."

That's pretty much Mr. Aaron's capsule scouting report on Mr. Gibson, as relayed to all Braves rookies (and heeded by the smart ones) of the era.

That's funny that the next quote is from McCarver. It's the one I remember most about Gibson

Gibson was surly and brusque even with his teammates. When his catcher Tim McCarver went to the mound for a conference, Gibson brushed him off, saying "The only thing you know about pitching is you can't hit it.

Heh. Gibson threw Reggie Jackson a brushback pitch in an old-timer's game in 1993, after Jackson homered off of him the year before. image

Gibson once said that some of his best pitches were "brush back", "knock down", and "hit batsman."

    Great stuff guys!

Bob Gibson was DA MAN! People forget he also played for the Harlem Globetrotters too. Now that is talent, being good enough to play with the Globetrotters AND be a HOF pitcher too. Dieon who?? image

I believe that is correct. Wasn't his nickname (at least one of them) the Omaha Flash?

  • About 5 yrs ago ,I think, some guy was driving in a manner Bob Gibson didn't care for so he followed the guy till he pulled over and Gibson punched him in the face!I guess he still has a temper.

  • Wish more players today had Gibson's mentality.

Brush a guy back today the benches empty.

Young punks don't realize pitching inside is part of the game.

They want to be cool with their dreadlocks, tattoos, pants below the cleats, and gangster-style ball caps.

Pitching inside sets up the outside part of the plate.
