Is this 1979 OPC Gretzky authentic?? The card not the autograph

I picked up this OPC autographed Gretzky rookie to put in my HOF signed rookie collection. Just came in today and I know there are a lot of counterfeits of this card so I thought I'd ask the board and get opinions on authenticity of the card, NOT THE AUTOGRAPH. The autograph already passed PSA/DNA quick opinion. Also believe the card has been trimmed, but that doesn't bother me as I just want it slabbed "Authentic" anyway for my signed rookie collection.

So, the question, is this an authentic 1979 OPC Wayne Gretzky or a counterfeit card? The back seems kinda white and that has me worried as the 1979 Topps hockey cards I had as a kid I think had a darker back.

Thanks,

Mike

I know *nothing* about this card or its many fakes. I do know, however, that it's unlikely for any counterfeit to be so off-center. Do you think the auto's good? I sorta like that it's in ballpoint pen, as it looks like it was signed back in the day, as opposed by at a card show.

    Good luck!

Don't know the auto but the card looks legit. If it makes you feel better mine is in worse shape and not signed!

    Mike:

I don't see any major issue with the auto (typical of his sloppy arena-style sigs of the mid and late '80s), but I have concerns about the card. Any chance you can provide a closer and higher resolution of Gretzky's left shoulder/chin area and the area around his skates and the border. That would help a bit...

    Hi Scott,

Sure, I'll scan those areas and post them shortly. Thanks!

Scott, here's some higher resolution scans of the requested areas. I didn't know whether you wanted Gretzky's actual left shoulder or the shoulder on the left of the card so I just scanned them both. Thanks,

    Mike

  • Here's mine (recent pickup) if it helps. Let me know if you want some higher res scans:

Mike - if you can scan yours at high resolution and crop just the bottom area by his skates, and include the black border, I think it's the easiest way to tell. If you have print dots in the line I think it's a reprint, if you have a solid like I think you're ok. I said mine is worse than yours, I think I'm right image

    Mike:

While it is still not conclusive from the scans, I would lean towards the card being good. The original scan created some concerns, but the borders appear to be OK while they looked a little inconsistent in the first scan. Also, the area around his chin looks better in the enlargement than it did in the original. Without seeing it in person, I would say you're probably OK with the card. It'll just be hard convincing some that haven't seen anything other than the traditional signatures that the one on the card is legit although it is.

  • Card is authentic. Auto may be too ... but not overly appealing to the eye, cyclops.
