OT: basement find...KISS autos along with some other odds and ends

wow, i was cleaning out my basement today and i found some interesting stuff....the first item is for mefer. i knew i had this somewhere but had given up on looking for it years ago.

i got this in 1980. i had drawn a picture of each member and they sent this back...this was when all 4 of the original members existed..i was in the 5th grade.

  • Very cool. I saw them in concert in 1997 and it was a very good show.

i was checking ebay to see if there were any autographs of them. looks like there are a couple and their auto's have changed over time. it looks like in my auto ace's last name is signed "frehely"...is this right?

could i send something like this to psa/dna? i've never sent an auto.

    calling mefer.....

    Thanks,

And I agree, they rock in concert!

Here's all 4 on one piece that was sold in April 07:

    KISS auction

It would cost you $75.00 plus shipping/insurance both ways to get KISS autographs authenticated by PSA/DNA

    Take care,

  • Those are not legit in my opinion.

PS: I just emailed that pic to a friend of mine. At one point he had one of the largest Kiss collections in US. He has seen enough auto's over the years.

    bwf,
please let me know what your friend has to say. this would have been in 1980. what strikes me as odd right off the bat is ace's last name. don't tell me it's fake....this would be like a dagger...ugh

    Thanks,

this is bringing back some great memories. this one is from 82.

the autos were obtained by me mailing a letter to the team/player back in the day. it's amazing what some of them sent....of course i really didn't care if something was autographed or not back then, i was just happy to receive a reply.

my all time favorite when i was a kid was dan fouts....here's the reverse of the montana auto'd pic. they were in a scrapbook and this page was removed and i found it in the same box as the kiss autos.

this is a picture of the 1982 topps fouts card that i drew. needless to say, i can remember freaking out when i received this back.

this is making me want to start a dan fouts registry set....and i just purchased a 75 rack pack from bbce with fouts on the back. image

...and this was from the topps send-in from the wrappers.

no telling how many of these things are floating around.

i also found a hank aaron poster..looks like from the 70s and a pete rose poster late 70s early 80s. no way i can scan those but if i can get my camera from my daughter i'll take a pic and see if someone can help me determine the actual date.

I really like the Kiss sigs! I bet Garret aka Knuckles could cut those out and make one hell of a card for you!

    What do ya think?

    mike,
i really never thought of making a card out of the sigs but that is a good idea. i should run it by knuckles to see what he thinks.

    bwf,
hard to explain: in my mind the autos are real...i may be in lala land, but that's just the way i feel about them. i appreciate you going out of your way and having your friend give his opinion. of course it was one i didn't want to hear image

i think with some of the creations knuckles has done in the past coupled with my interest in cards, the cut sigs is a neat idea. due to the size of the autos, i don't know how much card room knuckles would have to work with...i'm sure it would be a tall boy order..haha

    Thanks,

If they're on the large size - no problem - Garret made this Mays auto into PC size and I like it fine.

I'ld be interested to see what he comes up with.

My minds made up. Don't confuse me with the facts.

Sorry dude but those aren't real. The fact that Ace's last name was spelled incorrectly should tell you something. It's your money and not mine so if you want to waste it on custom made cards for fake auto's go ahead.

P.S.-Peter left the band in June of 1980 and wasn't on the best of terms towards the end of his time with the band. I highly doubt he was hanging around the management office waiting to sign fan mail.

I agree. It also looks like the person who signed them was left handed.
Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards.
Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.

MEFER in the house! I just came across these after being away this weekend. Thanks for sharing. Fantastic piece and story BUT I also must unfortunately agree that the autographs are not genuine. I have multiple examples of Gene, Paul and Peter and have seen multiple other legit examples.

On Gene's signature, he typically signs with what looks like a lower case "g." His signature is also not typically that neat. While I do not have mine in front of me, here is a legit Gene signature:

    Gene Auto

On Paul's signature, his name usually runs all together, is fairly fluid, and I feel (personally) just down right cool. You can also generally make out a star in the signature. The Paul signature you have is not close:

    Paul Stanley

Peter's signature is usually pretty sloppy and is does not sign with the lightening bolt "s." I can't find a legitiamate Peter Criss sig on the Internet at the moment, but that one does not look right to me. Also, as another board member pointed out, Peter was on his way out in 1980 from the band and was not on good terms with the other three. It therefore would be surprising to have him sign something with the others in 1980.

Ace's signature is typically more "curly" and goes more upright instead of to the right. Also, I do not recall ever seeing him sign the "F" backwards.

Again, I hate to be a killjoy too, but I would question the authenticity of the autographs. That aside, if I had received such a note as a young boy in 1980, I would have been THRILLED. You can't take that memory away and that is priceless.

    Thanks for sharing!

GREAT!!!!! This was the premise of my post. The authenticity was secondhand and I appreciate the opinions. image

The only reason I pushed my point was that I didn't want you to waste money having them turned into cards when I knew they weren't good. My intentions were not to rain on your parade!
