Let's play...Guess the Bump(s)!! And the winner is...

Digicat! Here are the only two that PSA thought were bump-worthy:

I'm OK with 2/10 8s getting the bump, but none of those 7s?!? It seems a 7 has to be an 8 to get a bump to 7.5! Thanks for playing.

I sent in my 10 best 7s and 10 best 8s (valued <=$500) for review on the $12/10 day special at the end of March. Test your re-grading skill and guess which one(s) received upgrades from the scans of the original slabs posted below (in chronological order). The winner will bask in the glow of adulation from fellow board members and may even note their victory on their resume when applying for a grader job at PSA! (You didn't think I was going to reward the winner with one of these cards, did you?!?)

Enjoy!

Too many to go through all but I think the 55 and 62 Aaron and the 70 Ryan (maybe a full on this one) got bumps

    I'd bump the:

    61 Mantle AS
    68 Mantle
    59 Kaline

But they are all pretty sweet.

    55 Aaron
    57 Aaron
    61 Mantle AS
    64 Aaron Standup
    59 Kaline
    59 Banks AS

I'll also guess that 1 or 2 of the 7s got bumped a full grade.

    My shots in the dark:

    1955 Topps Aaron
1964 Topps Stand-Aaron (potential full bump despite centering)
    1970 Topps Ryan
    1959 Topps Kaline
    1959 Topps Mays Catch

He's seems chipper, so I'm guessing he got a decent amount of bumps. Here are my guesses:

    1955 Aaron
    1957 Aaron
    1961 Mantle AS
    1968 Mantle
    1959 Kaline
    1959 Banks AS

    Possibles:
    1961 Mays
    1970 Bench

    Very nice cards.

My guess is that you did really well on your bumps.

At least half got either .5 or full grade bumps.

It's been like 14 hours since the last guess. I think it's ok to reveal the results now.

That '55 Aaron looks really nice. That looks like an 8.5 to me!

Sure, we could've cheated and looked up the serial numbers, but that would've defeated the purpose of the exercise...

It's always hard to tell from scans, but from the images that you posted, it seems that they were a little harsh on your reviews. I'm deliberating a few that I've got sitting on the side. One is a PSA 8 1962 Bunning that only has centering as an issue as the corners are borderline PSA 10. I was been told last year during a review that the centering was a "smidgen" too off to go into a PSA 9, but I'm hoping that it will now pass for a PSA 8.5. Since there are none graded higher than PSA 8 (there is a PSA 9 OC), it would be a homerun. Also, I've been hemming and hawing about sending in my PSA 8 1955 Roberto Clemente and PSA 8 1954-55 Topps Bill Mosienko as they are both worthy of bump. I know the Clemente would be huge (it's questionable whether it will bump as it is really just a strong 8 that is a bit off on centering) and I would think the Mosienko would be, too as it would be the highest graded from the landmark Topps hockey set. The others are a few PSA 9 OPC hockey cards that I still believe are PSA 10's being held against their will in PSA 9's...
  • so did digicat look up the serial numbers?

Yeah, I looked up the certs. I'm a image.

Hey paleocards, when I got my review sub back, they included little stickies on the slabs to explain why the cards didn't get the bump. Did you get those too, and if so, what did they say?

For my sub (3 bumps out of 7 reviews), corners was the reason given for all of them (one of them also had PD along with the corners).

Yep, I got the stickies and here's what they said:

1955 Topps Aaron, Hank: right corners
1956 Topps Williams, Ted: bottom right corner
1957 Topps Aaron, Hank: bottom left corner
1958 Topps WS Batting Foes: top corners
1961 Topps Mantle, Mickey: bottom corners
1962 Topps Aaron, Hank: top corners
1964 StndUp Aaron, Hank: top corners
1966 Topps Mays, Willie: corners & inclusion in right border
1968 Topps Mantle, Mickey: corners & white print on jersey
1970 Topps Ryan, Nolan: corners & left edge dent
1957 Topps Ford, Whitey: corners front & back
1959 Topps Kaline, Al: print dot right of ear
1959 Topps Mays' Catch: T/B centering
1960 Topps Banks, Ernie: right corners
1961 Topps Mays, Willie: top left, bottom right corners
1965 Topps Koufax, Sandy: top corners
1967 Topps Killebrew, Harmon: bottom right corner
1968 Topps Super Stars: Killer, Mays & Mantle: bottom left corner, front & back

From your results, they have basically the same standards for a 7.5 as an 8.5. I figured they would be very tough on 8.5 but the 7.5's seem ridiculous. The 61 A.S. Mantle looks very nice aand high end for sure. The submitter spent about $300 with the shipping and all and got about $100 in increased value. More and more I'm believing that the reviews are really only for high dollar cards over $500.
