It looks as though the Baldwin's auction had some big price tags, but one of the biggest before the juice was a South Africa 1930 proof set for 20k pounds.

I am glad then that I bought a few rare date SA Proofs a year or two ago. Nice coins btw.

Edit: The 1930 Proofs consists of a mintage of only 14 !

How many 1930 sets were struck? And of those, how many would you guess remain in their original boxes?

BTW, the Baldwin set was very nice, especially the silver.

In that case, the set doesn't sound all that expensive to me.

Hi guys, the mintage of 14 sets is low but the key to the price achieved for this set is the fact that it included a 1928 Farthing rather than the 1930 Farthing. I believe there is an estimated 4 1928 Proof Farthings making them one of the rarest of all SA coins. I hope this helps.

Well, the interesting thing is maybe not so much the price but rather that there is the interest and money at that level for SA coins now. I do wonder that British coins themselves generally do not reach such prices with what one would assume would be series with more demand. I mean a British Proof set of 1930 would struggle to bring half that price, and I would venture to say it would be of at least the same rarity and possibly above that of the South African.

After all those Polish pieces reaching ungodly levels has now shown that World (Darkside) coins can now reach for the stratosphere pricewise.
