feedback question

How long do you have to leave feedback for a transaction?

There is a seller on eBay I want to neg, the auction ended late February.

He claims to have send the package out but on USPS it still says "Electronic Shipping Info Received The U.S. Postal
Service was electronically notified by the shipper on March 12, 2008 to expect your package for
mailing. This does not indicate receipt by the USPS or the actual mailing date. Delivery status
information will be provided if / when available. No further information is available for this item."

I'll never pay by money order again!

    Old Scheme: 90-days

    New Scheme: 60-days

The week of May 19, sellers will no longer be able to leave NEGs.

Did they give you a feedback yet? Or are they waiting for you? I hate sellers who wait for the buyer to leave feedback first.. My option is that the buyer sent payment they fulfilled their requirements.

No he didn't leave any feedback, probably if I give a neg he will do the same.

No, the buyer fullfilled his/her requirements when they have item in hand, are satisfied, and have made that known to the seller. ONLY then is the deal completed.

Does the buyer have to leave feedback first? No, they can email the seller and let them know all is well.

Too many things can happen from the time the buyer simply pays for an item. (beyond the sellers control)

Except for the ones that use stolen credit cards, jacked PayPal accounts,
try to extort partial refunds, file fraudulent chargebacks, threaten NEGs if
    sellers don't pay money, etc.

FB is voluntary. I have enough. I won't be volunteering any after May 19.

Have you notified the seller that a problem exists?

Not sure if you have by the way you have written your post.

A buyer's only obligations are to pay the amount they are supposed to and be honest, if they are not satisfied they are obligated to let the seller "make it right". Anything else is just common courtesy, which it seems can be sorely lacking today.
  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
A sellers only obligation is to ship the item and be honest too.

If a buyer has a problem it is the sellers obligation to make it right.

Feedback should only be exchanged when the seller knows the buyer is satisfied.

    It is rather simple.

Knock on wood I haven't bought from any bad sellers, one that was slow in shipping, and one that was grumpy, but nothing to even think of giving a neg to.

I agree with you completely! Except for the hate part. I buy from several dealers that I respect very much, that wait for the buyer to leave feedback first. They have a valid argument. I just do not agree with it.
  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
You don't agree with the argument that people want to make sure that the item they sent was
delivered and that you are happy with it?

seems to me that most reasonable people would like that.

    Steve;
I should clarify. I did not mean I disagree with the concept, I meant I disagree with it for my own policy. My personal philosophy as a seller, is to put myself in the buyers shoes and try to have policies that I think buyers feel most comfortable with, and at the same time not hurt myself as a seller. I like to make my buyers feel they can leave whatever feedback they want, without worrying about how I will react. I think that is an important part of customer service. It sends the messege: I trust you, you can trust me.

However, I certainly understand why some/many sellers do not leave the feedback first. Policies are just that, policies. From time to time we have to change them, depending on our experience. If a seller has been burned a few times leaving feedback first, I can certainly understand why they stopped.

In a few weeks, when Ebay changes their policy again, this whole argument will go away. Sellers will not be able to leave neutral or negative feedback at all.
  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
My policy of not leaving positive feedback first had /has nothing to do with the ability of leaving a negative or neutral.

My policy is to make sure my customer has the item in hand and is satisfied.

Steve; I understand that is why you have your policy, and as a buyer I can appreciate that. It does make sense and has merit. I went another way in my listings, to address the buyers that do not appreciate it. I guess in a way it is sort of mute. If we take care of the customer properly, most buyers probably do not care which feedback policy we adopt.
  • Is anyone here absolutely sure about the May 19th date for sellers inability to leave feedback? I have an alternate ID that I used to use for selling until a few NPB's left me retalitory negs. Now I use it just to snipe auctions with fake vintage cards or stolen photos, including the PSA 9 Gretzky that was mentioned in a thread yesterday. Just wondering if I can wait until the 19th to neg the seller with no reprocussions.

The ONLY "official" statement is: "The week of May 19."

I would wait to leave any NEGs until the thing has been implemented.

BUT, there are conflicting stories about which transactions will be governed
    by the "new" scheme.

Will sales made BEFORE 5-19 be covered? We think so, BUT we do NOT
know for sure. Recent statements indicate "yes." Earlier statements suggest
    "maybe not."

Patience is good in this circumstance.

Cute Thread Title on EBAY board:

New Series: Survivor eBay...coming to a computer near you on May 19th! ...and all buyers will have an immunity idol!

On May 19th there will be a lot of satisfied buyers who will still leave a neg for sellers who refuse to leave a positive for them based upon the fact that they did not leave feedback first.

I mean honestly, as a seller, if you send an item that isnt as described and the buyer leaves you a neg, is it the intention of the seller to leave a neg in return since he didnt leave FB first? Should the buyer give you a neutral if you didnt make it right originally even though you might have upon being notified? Should the buyer give you a positive even though the transaction was far from a positive experience.

FB should be based upon a blind method. You have 30 days to leave FB, neither is displayed until the end of the 30 day period. no retaliation, no forced FB, no holding FB hostage...it is what it is.
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY
  • storm888storm888 Posts: 11,701 ✭✭✭
As a seller, I would even be satisfied with this:

Sellers have 30-days to leave FB.

Buyers have 60-days to leave FB.

That would preclude "retaliation" by bad sellers.

    EBAY rejected that concept.

Hate to pull up forgotten threads, but..... I mentioned I won a few auctions from a seller with numerous ID's and uses stolen photos of cards he doesnt own or just sells reprints as originals. I went ahead and left him negs. In return he sent me a nasty email stating that I was lucky he couldnt leave me feedback or he would leave me negs too. Guess the new policy has taken effect already.
  • Your seller is clueless, I just checked with a UPI I just closed and was able to leave him a neg.

I thought about that. It is definately a possibility. Another concern: A buyer told me I was deleting my pictures too soon, before the buyer received the item. I definately will wait longer before deleting pictures, as well as continue to leave feedback first as a seller.

I need to do everything I can to avoid negs from buyers when possible. With these changes, even sellers with excellent ratings can start facing holds on their PayPal accounts if they get hit with one neg or nuetral in any given month (assuming that it represents 5% of sellers feedback for that given month).

If Ebay wanted to clean up bad sellers, they will definately do it with this policy. Unfortunately, this will not clean up bad buyers, only give them more ammunition to hold sellers hostage. Definately, not a level playing field. Threads from other sellers on this board giving heads up on buyers to block, could become more valuable than ever.
  • I am not changing my feedback policy, bottom line is the buyers still want feedback. How many sellers are going to leave anything if a buyer leaves a neg for no reason?

9 times out of 10 if a buyer says do this or I will neg you he is going to neg you regardless of what you do.

I would like to think it's that easy. You can provide the best communication and ship the same day that payment is received, but there are still buyers out there (and Steve, I don't have the mention anyone's name as you know exactly who I am referring to) who will not be satisfied unless you hand deliver their Jackie Robinson card 10 minutes after the auctions ends, whether payment has cleared or not. image

It takes all kinds...and it's the unreasonable ones who will make honest sellers go crazy.

VERY soon that will be another moot point at EBAY.

A current component of the Best-Match search-results rewards
    EBAY-hosted pictures AND penalizes self-hosted and third-party
    hosted pictures.

EBAY will likely be the ONLY picture-host allowed, in less than 12-months.

    .........................................................................

The week of May 19 will, of course, also mark the end of Square-Trade intervention
    services in the feedback-withdrawal game.

    .................................................................

ONE neutral FB will result in PayPal holding funds for 21-days, IF the seller
has less than 20-transactions per month.

    ........................................

My guess is that the new schemes will put an end to MOST of the 1952-Mantle scams
that we have discussed here so frequently. That IS a good thing.
