Tristar Turns a 10 Cent Card into a 1/1 Masterpiece

This is just another example of how making something that isn't worth much into a 1/1 makes the item so ridiculously valuable.

Step 1: Take a 1982 Donruss Ralph Houk card that you can buy on Beckett.com for 10 cents
http://www.beckett.com/items/242303/?N=0
Step 2: Get Ralph Houk to autograph the card (how much could that really cost? $50-75?)
Step 3: Cut out the autograph and put it in a card
Step 4: Stamp the card "1/1"
Step 5: Watch the card become suddenly attractive in an eBay auction
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=150241629751&ssPageName=STRK:MEBI:IT&ih=005

I don't really know how I feel about cutting up a card to get an autograph, then make it a 1/1. Any thoughts?

well so far it is at $20...with 7 min left, if it cost $50 for the auto.. this is a loser unless there is a bidding frenzy which I doubt

Based on your analogy, Tristar would be about to take a loss on that card.

I did see a tri-star Richie Ashburn card which recently went for a ridiculous $400 and some odd dollars. It was an old Pacific legends card that he had signed, which they cut in half and then pasted it onto one of their cards. You could probably buy the Pacific card for less than $20 signed.

This hobby is going to come crashing down on itself again I think.

These cards will be as worthless as the Classic, Just, Scoreboard, and all the other second rate crap that people bought 10 years ago.

what an absolutely ridiculous looking card. Who is buying this crap?

Let me say that I am not one of those "all shiny cards are crap" people, in fact, I used to have a very respectable "shiny card" collection. This however, is just awful. I don't even have any good adjectives to describe it. People really will buy anything.

Reminds of the line from Tommy Boy "if you want me to take a crap in a box and mark it guaranteed, I will, I've got the time". This is literally a pile of crap stamped 1/1 and given a premium. Utterly ridiculous.

Amazing. What's the next thing the will cut up and call a card? Cut a card up, and insert it in another card and call it a 1/1. The most troubling thing is someone is buying into this. Sad.

Surprised no one noticed the irony of the Houk card. The card notes "4x WS Champion" (with the Yankees) and the card is him in his Boston road jersey...

I understand buying the Rose maybe since he has very limited cards. But other players I dunno.

Actually, I don't understand buying the rose. $390? Why not buy a signed 82 fleer for $350 less and it would look a lot better?

  • i guess i can see your point. i have been offered the second card and it looks better. then i will be the owner of both of the cards. i have several auto cards. i just thought that it would be a rare item, like the rarest i have..don

Sorry Don, didn't mean to rain on your parade. To each his own. I agree though, why not buy the full 8 Fleer already signed? I have a ball, bat and batting helmet signed by Rose. I think I have a combined $200 into all of them, including the TPA fees.

Yes the card is technically "rare" but it's manufactured rarity. You could get him to sign for $90, and if you catch him before or after the show he's signing at, maybe free. If you're happy, that's all that matters though.
