SCD and Tuff Stuff...The record is set straight...

Is it just me or has SCD become Tuff Stuff newspaper with more ads?

Comments

  • I think SCD is worse. They need to go back to the magazine that they had years ago.
  • Hahaha...I just 5 minutes ago bought a one year subscription to SCD...Can't wait until I get something full of ads, wish I knew that...

Do yourself a favor...if you get SCD, it's basically Tuff Stuff without the price guide. So, don't get both.

The SCD ads are fun to read and laugh at.

I especially like the autograph signing ads. "Skip Jutz: $45. Barry Foote: $55". Then there can be an ad right next to it with "Andre Dawson: $20". There definitely is NOT equality with what promotors seem to think they can get away with charging.
  • Guru: I'm not here to start an argument, but I don't know where what this thread is based upon. SCD and Tuff Stuff rarely duplicate articles/content. Tuff Stuff is tailored to the beginning collector, with more of an emphasis on modern stuff and it's mostly price guide. SCD is for the hardcore collector, with vintage features, memorabilia, autographs, etc. and no price guide. If the content is rarely duplicated, where does this claim come from?

jrinck: I agree and even laugh at what some of these guys/promoters want for a signature. It's usually some utility guy for a great team in the 1960s that few of us have ever heard of.

joeknowscards: You are going to love the Keith Olbermann features we have coming up. He dives into Topps proofs deeper than anyone ever has and it's just an amazing piece that will run in 5-6 different segments.

    Steve,

It seems like every time I open the SCD I see a lot of the same articles that I read in Tuff Stuff. I totally know you're not trying to start an argument or anything. So I don't take it that way. I may very well be wrong and it may seem like it is, but it might not be. I do, however, dislike all the ad's. I mean, some of them are funny, but I'm there for info. But, to each his own. I will still subscribe to both because I do like parts of both. I will agree that it's been a hard personal transition from being an amatuer collector to someone really into the hardcore hobby stuff. I will say this, they each bring something different to the table.

I apologize if I have brought any offense to anyone regarding either one of the magazines.

I just got another lowball offer for a year sub to SCD.

    I had sub'ed from 1990 straight to Jan 2007.

For 50 cents an issue? What the heck.

I've seen articles over the years sometimes cross from SCD to Tuff Stuff - but not that often.

The hobby isn't what it was during the "boom" period of the early 90s - but I'm not gonna kill the messenger and throw SCD under the bus.

We all know why SCD is in the shape it's in right now and I'm not gonna rehash this - I was the one who got everyone free short term introductory subs to SCD - we all know it's lost all the luster of days past. image

    Old thread with SCD offer.

I won't subscribe to SCD as long as they keep polluting it with Crooked Coach's Corner auctions.

I was very close to pulling the trigger on a CC auction and just didn't do it --- I have asked the question before "what is the deal with all the hate directed at Coach's Corner" the vile has got me in a pause mode

Coach's Corner is chock full of fake autographs. Their pet "authenticators" are Chris Morales and STAT.

Pick a long-dead HOFer (or top music or historical star), and they regularly have bad fake autos of him/her that they claim to be worth thousands or tens of thousands, all "authenticated" by STAT or Morales. There's a reason these items sell for 5-50% of what they would bring in a major catalog auction - they're fake and no one who knows better will touch them.

Net54 has a very long and informative thread about these scum.

The New York Daily News article is also interesting reading.

Here's a couple money quotes from the NYDN article:

<< <i>"We will never use Morales," says Rob Lifson, president of Robert Edward Auctions. "If somebody says they have a piece they want to consign that has been authenticated by Christopher Morales, we choose not to pursue it. I'm not saying it is bad. I'm just saying it's not a valuable use of our time." >>

<< <i>Lelands president Mike Heffner is even more dismissive: "I can't tell you that I've ever seen anything he's authenticated that is actually real." >>

Coach's Corner Auctions are overflowing with garbage each and every time, and SCD has to know it. They threw away their credibility in the pursuit of advertising revenue.

    I agree.

I used to buy selective stuff there and did well - but they do have a boatload of garbage and really bad auto'ed stuff.

But, there's also good stuff stuck in between the lines.

E.g. I picked this card up for 67 bucks 2 yrs ago:

I would be very careful with anything signed that's not from UD or PSA/DNA from that company.

Okay...I'm here to set the record straight. I went back last night and counted like 3-4 times that the articles crossed over.
I apologize for the reference of SCD being Tuff Stuff w/out the price guide. That's not correct.

I will, however, not apologize for feeling that there are WAY TOO MANY ad's in this thing.
The price of the magazine is fair for what you get.

Nick M, you beat me to it. SCD used to be ok but with their connections to CC< it has become an embarassment and black eye in the hobby.
