Home Trading Cards & Memorabilia Forum

Hi, new guy here

Just wanted to introduce myself. I've been lurking for a while and have learned quite a bit, so I thought it would only be fair for me to join and reciprocate, though my knowledge is still very limited. There seems to be a group of very good guys here.

Like many others, I collected back in the late 80's and early 90's, then took a long hiatus. I only got back into the hobby last May, thanks to my discovery of this site called Ebay. I decided I would try to put together my all-time favorite set, 1957 topps baseball. I had no idea how difficult or expensive it would be, and had I known, I might have held off. But I started, and now there's no turning back. I'm sure my story is not unique.

I look forward to my time here and hope to become a contributing member of this forum.

Regards
Keith

    Hi Keith

Welcome here and back to the hobby!

Sometimes my wife wished I had left! I keep telling her it's money well spent! Right?

Good luck on the 57T set - it's a favorite around here - are you doing it graded?

My recommendation? Don't get caught up in it and go all OCD.

I think of doing a set like a marathon rather than a sprint.

Further advice? Keep that focus and not run all over the place - establish a budget and STICK to it! That will eliminate pain, regrets, night sweats and heart palpitations! image

Don't be a stranger - I'm looking forward to your pickups - if ya need any help with scan and posting - don't hesitate to ask.

Welcome aboard Keith - this is a great site as I'm sure you already know

  • Thanks for the warm welcome guys. As far as the set, I am doing the entire thing graded. I just put my set on the registry under jdmi's 1957 topps baseball.

You will have to forgive me as I am sort of a Luddite; I just got high speed a few months ago...I don't know how to put up links... I don't even own a scanner, which I will rectify shortly as I greatly enjoy scans of all the great cards members share, so it's only fair if I do the same. It will take me a while to get up to speed and I will certainly be asking for a lot of advice.

Are you from LA or Brooklyn? The reason i ask is because 1957 just happened to be the last year for the Brooklyn Dodgers, and I guess I figured it might be one of the reasons you chose to do the 1957 set.

Keith, welcome to the gang. I'm also a big Dodger fan, and also list the '57 set as my all-time favorite set. I completed mine in late '06, but in raw and ragged (P/F/G) condition.

Glad to have you on board.

Hey Keith, glad you finally showed up, we were begining to worry. image

  • Estil, I've always liked the '57s ever since I first saw a card from that set back when I was a kid in the seventies. Something about the simple design just appealed to me, even at a young age. And the fact that it was the last year for the Dodgers in Brooklyn also plays a big part. I've read several books about baseball in the fifties and imagine it would have been a great time to be a baseball fan...especially 1955 for Dodgers' faithful.

I had no idea when I started this set last year just how popular it is. Good for me in that graded cards are plentiful, but bad in that prices are high, especially when it's a card I need.

Welcome Keith. It is always interesting to me how the collecting bug comes back to bite people... myself included. Like you said, I think most of us drifted out of the hobby at some point, only to find ourselves sucked back in! I hope you enjoy it twice as much the second time around and good luck with your set.

Welcome, Keith. I'm very new to the boards myself. '57 is also my all-time favorite set, though I've never had the guts to tackle it. I truly admire your ambition. Please keep us posted on the progress.

    Welcome aboard!

The 1957 set is one of my favorites, too. My first vintage purchases as a 13-year old collector were a Warren Spahn and a Don Newcombe from that set. Good luck with it!

Stories about the Dodgers in Brooklyn are a favorite of mine.

Most recently on HBO - coverage of the Lords of Flatbush - very well done.

Again - good luck on the set.

Welcome. Good move deciding to join the forum, this place is great.

As for the dedication it takes to complete a graded '57T set, I salute you.

I haven't gotten brave enough to attempt such an expensive project yet. I have a rust bucket of a '69 Camaro that is a money drain enough. One day it will be complete and then maybe I'll be able to take a swing at such a feat.
