Dusty Baker's House

I have posted before that Steve Sax and Dusty Baker live in my part of Sacramento. Sax lives about a mile from my house and when my cousin was in town from LA a couple years ago we went for a run by his house. It's a nice home but nothing over the top. Probably 3,000 sq feet, average size lot, gated community, and overall very nice. It's probably a $900k house in today's down market. A buddy who I grew up with in LA, back in the 70's, was in town this week so today we went for a jog by Dusty's house. Dusty has a house in the Bay Area and probably Cinci but I have heard his son lives at this house, with mom, in Granite Bay (9090 Silversword, Granite Bay, Cali). I had not driven by it before so I map quested it. 3.1 miles from my house so just right for a nice morning run. We found his street, a few blocks past Granite Bay high school (Natalie Gulbis being the most famous alum I believe). The neighborhood was not gated so we could run right on up to the house but the house itself had a large gate around it. It's on a rural street where lots of people still have horses and what not. Also many run down and beat up farm houses. Anyway, his street has priamrily large lots (2+ acres I would guess). The house next door to Dusty is for sale with 2,600 sq feet, 2.5 acres, nice looking pool and asking $1.2m. I do not think they will get it unless someone really wants to live next door to Dusty Baker. Anyway, as we jogged down the street my buddy and I both said, at the same time, "there it is." We figured it out as we saw the house with the sport court and huge batting cage. The batting cage had a professional pitching machine in it. Next to it were about 10 stadium seats from, what appeared to be, different stadiums. The seats were covered by a large roof which extended around the back side of the cage too so people could stand behind it and be in the shade. The house itself was recently built. It's on 4 acres and I would guess about 4,000 sq feet for the house size. It's not crazy big and certainly not over the top but it is very nice looking. Has a large covered, circular driveway, so one could drive right up to the house and park under the cover. There is a 4 car garage attached to the house. There also is a 4 or 5 car garage out back which appears to have a large door for an rv or something. I would imagine it's about a $1.6m house in today's market. Anyway, I thought some of you may enjoy hearing about it.

  • That's sweet man.

I was lucky enough to go to middle school with Cecil Fielder's daughter. They had a huge house that was about 2 to 3 times bigger than every other house in the neighborhood. They had a movie theatre, tennis courts, basketball court, pool, pitching machine, and it was 3 floors. The driveway was brick and had different colored bricks that made a pattern resembling a baseball diamond and FIELDER across the outfield.

Once Prince got drafted out of high school and Cecil went bankrupt, the family packed up and moved out. The house was on the market for about 2 years because it's so out of place for where we live. Cecil just built it there because of the baseball program at the high school down the road, which is synonomous with producing BIG talent in pretty much every sport( for baseball, it's been Tim Wakefield as the biggest with a few other MLBers) . Anyways, someone finally bought the house and ripped out the brick driveway bearing Fielder's name.

  • Kansas City area close encounters with greatness--

I went to junior high and high school with Hank Stram's kids.
It was nothing to see The Mentor around town. Great guy.

Another Hank, Hank Bauer, owned a liquor store. Go in to buy
some beer, and end up talking to Hank for an hour. It was great.

larryallen, that's a cool thread. I lived in Orangevale and Roseville in the late 70s and 80s, Granite Bay was just emerging, Folsom was just taking off. I LOVED that area. El Dorado Hills too. Oak trees, hills, beautiful summers, and Folsom Lake. I used to work with Dusty Baker's sister up there, she was a crackup. Looked just like him.

    For the Larry Allen fan.......
I used to see Larry workout at Gold's Gym and 5th Street Fitness in Santa Rosa CA. He was easily the strongest guy Ive ever seen in any gym. He went to College at nearby Sonoma State (which by the way doesn't even have a Football Team anymore).

Besides players I played against, The only other sports star I used to see all the time was Joe Montana, he lived 10 miles away and his kids played High School sports and we used to see him at the games all the time. He used to also hang out at a Wine Bar easily seen by his SUV in the parking lot many days of the week. No one really bothered him, you kinda got used to him being around. I no longer live in NorCal, but it wasnt unusual to see stars on vacation or living in the wine country at the time.

Im 2,500 miles out in the middle of the Pacific now.....

    FKW-
You are right. I went to Sonoma State (graduated in '91) hence my being a Larry Allen fan. Larry was drafted in '94 (first guy ever drafted out of SSU), Freddie Bradley (a running back) was drafted by the Dolphins in '95 and the football team was killed in '96. Go figure!?

Mike- Next time I go for a run by Dusty's house I will at least take my camera phone... if not a full digital camera. Or maybe I will do a tour of the athletes homes in the area and get a few pix to share.

    Larryallen,

My wife works for a non-profit here in Sacramento and Steve Sax is a volunteer of the organization . . . The other night he came to a meeting to give a presentation (which I hear was very good) and he brought a box of signed baseballs to give out. I thought that was pretty cool. Unfortunately, so did my German Shepard. Now I have a Steve Sax autographed baseball with smeared ink and canine impressions.

I guess he's an investment advisor or stock broker now which seems like a high-stress job for someone that already made about $18 million playing baseball.
