Preparing my first graded submission: 1984 Donruss What do you think these grade? (GRADES ARE IN)

Hi,
After a week of going through my new to me 84 Donruss set. I have pulled the cards which were low pop commons or superstars that I feel have the best shot at grading high. There were some other nice cards, but the pop is too high to make good money on them. I'm going to send them in under the set registry $5.00 per card special, and I hope to hit some 10's to sale on some low pop commons and a couple superstars. This is my first submission, I've been over the cards with a magnifier and all look to me like they have a shot at what I would envision a 10 at (except for the centering on the Darling but that's for a friend to have anyway), but like I said I'm a rookie at this.

What do you feel these grades would grade?? Do you see any 10's here? If so, which ones? If you see any black spots like on the corner of the Beniquez, they are on my scanner only, not on the card. Honest opinions please, your criticisms won't bother me, they'll help me become a better screener. Thanks,

Mike

Going by scans alone is tough pending that the cards have sharp
corners with no other blemishes, scuffing, surface scratches, printer's spots on back, etc. I'm gauging by centering, and edges, and on a couple I see a dull corner. Here's my take, and I hope I'm
    one grade lower.

    Dravecky DK 9
    Checklist 8
    Stenhouse 9
    Darling 8
    Wilson 9
Ryan 9 / even with the tilt
    Barfield 9
    Jose Cruz 10
    LaCoss 9
    Beniquez 9
    Orosco 9
    Lake 9
    Whitaker 9
    Castillo 10
    Rogers 9
    Butcher 8
    Gwynn 9
    Reardon 9
Mattingly 9 / I hope u get a 10 on this sweet one, but just on
standard alone, I believe they're just tough on it
    period!
    Davis 8
    Trout 9
    Sutter 9
    Gossage 8 /with tilt
    Johnson 9

    Good luck!

    EagleEyeKid,

Thanks for your feedback, I might save my $5.00 on the ones that you think are 8's. Thanks for taking the time to look and respond to my original post.

Mike, good luck. I hope I'm wrong and you score
1 higher at what I think.

Arnyvee is pretty good with this issue. Hopefully he'll chime
    in and give his input.

It's all wrapped up and ready to be shipped tomorrow. I took out the ones that EagleEye said might be 8's. Sending in 19 cards. Hopefully I won't be too disappointed with the results. I would like to hit at least 4 10's to make it worth my while, oh well, live and learn. What is the usual turaround time for set registry specials? How do you check your status online once you send them and they receive them? Thanks,

    Mike

Finally got some poppage on my 84 Donruss submission. Not too bad for my first submission I guess. Out of 19 cards, I got 5 10's, 13 9's, and 1 8. I don't know how in the heck I got an 8, but I did. I sure did want the Mattingly to be a 10, but oh well, maybe next time.

    Congrats on the grades, Mike.

Sounds like you were overall pleased with them.

So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts
  • Not bad for your first sub! Looks good. Who knows why the Ryan got an 8? Maybe a small surface wrinkle?

    Way to go!!
    Maybe they did factor in the "tilt" for the Ryan;
that's why it got an 8? Overall, you did good.
    One 8 is not bad.

Is it worth it to send in 1984 Donruss minor stars and commons to get a 9? I have a lot of 1984 singles since like everyone else in the mid-80's I was chasing the Mattingly.

For resale purposes, it is not worth it to get a 9 on a common or minor star, BUT I don't have the capability of having the eye to pick out only 10's to send in, and low pop 84 Donruss commons in PSA 10 have gone from $10.00-$400++ on ebay, therefore, I sent some in knowing that I wouldn't get all 10's, but hoping to get a few to make it worth my while and I think it's going to turn out to be worth my while.

    Take care,

    Mike
