Ethical to Artifically Inseminate Auction by Including Replica Cards?

I noticed there is an REA Auction for '52 topps set, that contains a replica Mantle RC.

1- I should scan the auction, but the replica mantle is prominently displayed in the auction
2- Auction estimates to sell for quite a grip
3- Is this really helping out vintage cardboard market, including replicas w/ normal set?
4- Is there any instance of auctions including replica cards w/ the originals?

I personally think it sucks & speaks to how truly greedy sellers & (apparently) sellers are. This replica card will prolly be passed on to ebay and sold for big bucks. Who has the change to spend 4-5 figures on a '52 set & wants a replica mantle w/ the set?

whatever but i think it stinks.

I don't know, but they never responded to an email I sent them asking if they wanted to consign an item of mine. Nice customer service.

I asked them if they wanted to run that 59 AL AS team signed ball I just bought. I figured it would bring a lot more at auction than on ebay, but it might not be expensive enough for them to run. Still, would've been nice of them to answer. If it was a 1933 AS ball they would've flown somebody to my house and knocked on my door.

Lee, I suspect the email never got to Rob for whatever reason. Above all he's very, very personable and customer oriented, and will pick up the phone to talk to anyone in a heartbeat. I"d give him a second chance, although I suspect on this particular item you might do better in a smaller auction.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

Anthony- I don't doubt that he's a standup guy; I've heard the same from several people. I just find it weird that they wouldn't respond to someone who filled out their online consignment email form. What's the point of having it?

You're right that the ball should probably just be sold on ebay, but I've never sold anything through any of the houses so I figured this is a reasonable item to take a shot with where I won't get hurt too bad.

Just an update that Robert finally did get back to me about my ball. Just thought it would be fair to mention this.
  • Hi Julen:

Just checking in on this to clarify something. There are two complete 1952 Topps sets in the REA auction this year. The Mantles in both sets are PSA 3. There is no replica Mantle. Perhaps you're confusing REA with another auction?
