If you had $150 to spend

If you had the money spend every few weeks would you buy a 2007 or 2008 box or a vintage or hall of famer card? graded or ungraded?

I'd chip away at a nice vintage set - 1965, 1967, or 1969 - in NM or better with the top 10 cards graded. I'd be picky and patient. I'd enjoy the cards between purchases - really study them and really get to know the set. When complete I'd celebrate. Then I'd do it again and again.

Well looking at my Ebay 30 day average, I am spending right about $150 every couple weeks, though this is not by design.

I have recently been focusing on the following:

1.) HOF NBA Autographs
2.)1960 Topps Graded (All Star Cards and HOFers)
3.) All Time Philadelphia Phillies graded (Ashburn, Carlton, Schmidt, Roberts, and Bunning)

I rarely buy any new boxes, and will just grab the cards I like off of Ebay usually at a savings. I have been burnt too many times with Modern wax, though maybe I just have bad luck.

Just say no to wax. I open maybe one or two boxes a year and regret it. $150 can buy you a lot of Basketball HOF Autos. A lot of great players have affordable autos.

Graded vintage. Do you collect baseball or football? If football, there are plenty of sets to collect. Personally, I love autographed Hall of Famer cards and higher grade HOF rookie cards. Both hold their value and are in demand.

I'd stay away from new boxes, unless it is product you really like. Way too easy to just buy singles off ebay and let other's take the gamble on busting new stuff.

Could not agree more. Every time I open wax I say I will never do it again. And then, a few months later, I go through it all over again. What a vicious cycle!

There is nothing like the feeling of opening a pack of cards though. When you open wax, you aren't paying for the cards, you're paying for the rush of excitement and adrenaline. If you're opening wax for the pulls, you're going to be disappointed 99 percent of the time. Since I'm not a set-builder, the only reason I buy wax is for that fleeting moment of happiness. Lately, I've been focusing on vintage and buying superstar second year cards and semi-star rookie cards. I'm still trying to get a full HOF rookie card collection, but the second year cards and semi-star rookie cards are a lot cheaper, and 150 dollars can get you a couple in decent condition.

I would buy graded vintage at first; tobacco, caramel, exhibits, whatever appeals to you. Eventually, you should be able to purchase raw. To me, it is the most enjoyable and there is not much risk of losing your investment. I mean really, would you want Evan Longoria or Ty Cobb?

Buying wax is like the lottery but you have to sell the lottery winnings before they drop in value.

Buy vintage of players/teams/sets you like in the best condition you can afford. There's always a market for quality.

I have to admit my sin, Today after leaving the vintage card show(slightly disappointed) I took my son to wallyworld so he could get some Upper Deck Football Packs. I purchased (gulp) a few 08 Topps Heritage. They seem nice, but I checked out the thread about them and it's insane. I will not stray from vintage again. Buy Vintage rookies and superstars in the highest grade you can afford.

I would buy whatever makes ya happy.

If ya like opening new packs? It's entertainment - especially if ya like putting sets together.

I used to buy blaster boxes and put a Topps set together every year.

Stopped because I just didn't have the time to do it with other stuff I was doing - but it was a lot of fun.

The Topps Heritage set is really sweet and hard to put together without help - that's one option.

Consider picking one affordable vintage set - one that doesn't have a load of cards if you're gonna do it graded.

FB and BKB sets are smaller in general. The 63F BB set is pure enjoyment IMO - only 67 cards with the checklist.

Or how about a theme set - like a raw HOF BB or FB set? If graded, it could get pricey but heck - collecting doesn't have to be a "sprint" to the finish line - think of it as a long, long "marathon" - no hurry.
