Picked up a nice Eddie Murray signed rookie for my Topps signed rookie collection

I got this 1978 Eddie Murray signed rookie card today from ebay to include in my signed Topps rookie card collection. I've heard he's a relatively tough autograph for one of the modern players, but I remember him signing for me a few times in between Arlington Stadium and the Arlington Marriott when I was growing up. I decided to go ahead and get it while I have the opportunity if he's truly become difficult.

He's not that difficult if you meet him but I don't think he does shows or anything. He's my favorite player of all time.

Edit- My friend and I were at the other game and broke out into a random "EDDIE, EDDIE" chant. Then we were talking about how the O's should trade for a guy named Eddie, even if he sucks, just because it would keep the fans in the game.
  • Great looking Rookie card Mike!

Whats better than a Rookie card? An autographed one! image

    Nice!

  • Looks REALLY good Mike. Living in MD and going to a lot of O's games back in the day he is one of my favorite O's and I have got him a few times and always found him to be a nice guy. Hope he hasn't changed.

Nice auto and pretty nice looking card in general. I think the Murray is the top 10 on badly centered Topps cards.
Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards.
Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.

I grew up in Rochester, NY when the Rochester Red Wings were a farm team for the Orioles and had a scrimmage game with them every year. Both Eddie and Cal were really great about mingling and signing for the fans before and after the game. Both guys were, and remain, class acts in my book.

Funny how the hobby changes. When I had Eddie sign my 1978 Topps rookies (this was back in the early 80's), conventional wisdom seemed to be not having rookie cards signed as it lessened the value. I never did quite understand that logic personally.

    Very nice pickup Mike.

I would like to have the card auto'ed also.

Went to a Mets game in 1993 - got the tickets from my NCOIC where I was stationed - the seats were incredible! First base dugout - 3rd row in; first time I had ever sat in the infield - well at least legally.

My son was 10 - he called Eddie over during warmup - he was nice to him and signed his program. The field was in the best shape I had ever seen it! Great nite for a game.

Side note - San Antonio is the 7th largest city in the US and doesn't have a ML BB team!!!!!

I listed that card in the "75-80 Favorites" thread, so I'm already on record as liking it. I like it when guys are solo on their rookie cards, like Brett and Reggie Jackson, and I'm a sucker for any card with that neat little All Rookie Team trophy on it, no matter who the player is.

Getting one of these with Mr. Murray's (rather nice) signature is a wonderful bonus.
  • I believe he is a tough signer, that is a nice pickup.
  • Nice purchase, Mike.

Always have thought that is a great looking card, and the auto just makes it that much sweeter..

I never understood that logic either. To me, it was a bit of a sign of authenticity before the days of PSA/DNA and Spence. Since the rookie card being signed had a sellable value to it (as opposed to book value), to me it seemed like a safer buy. Why ruin a $40 Murray rookie with a forged signature, when you could "enhance" a non-movable 1987 Topps with a forged signature instead?

Nice signed Murray! I have one as well, but it has a bit of a faded signature.

    Who is Rober Maris?
  • He's a tough signer in person. He used to have season tickets to the Clippers (when he was hitting coach for the Dodgers) about 3 rows down from my seats and I used to watch as autograph hounds got turned down each time they would come up to him. I talked to him in the food line once and he griped about people not leaving him alone when he was with his family.
