Is it prudent to invest in unproven rookie cards, years before they make the show?

    It's a gamble, and knowing when to sell... you definetely don't want to hold on for too long.

    How many of these young guys will pass Ortiz in stats? Ortiz's most rare rookie (numbered to 100), books for 600 and last one sold for about 400... So many of these prospects sell for crazy high$$, and they will never touch Ortiz numbers....it's all about HYPE. I have said Pujols stuff was overpriced for so long...and they are beginning to come down, and i suspect his stuff will still come down QUITE a bit more.

    It's all in the timing...don't be too greedy or you will miss the boat.

    Pujols was in the major leagues the year his rookie cards came out.

    Buying individual player cards who are expected not to make the majors for several years is speculating.

    Buying unopened boxes of those sets full of rookies may be investing.

    Is it now impossible to buy a rookie card of someone unless they have made it to the show?? Unless it is some minor league card. I thought the card companies have done away with making cards of players unless they have some type of major league experience??

    Its my understanding they cannot have a "base card" or use the RC logo but can print them as 1st Bowman card or Prospect or as a insert as Bowman Draft does. The majority of BDP is kids who are years away.

    OP- as earlier stated, timing. Baseball America is a great resource.
