  • Sad day for Steeler fans! He will be missed but at least he will live on thru the terrible towels.

Sorry to hear that. I grew up listening to he and Bill Hargrove call the Steeler games. He'd get so excited sometimes that he couldn't speak.

They should put on his epitaph, "This is Myron Cope on Sports", his signature sign-off as a sportscaster.

    Very sad indeed!

I remember he had a very distinctive voice - sorta like Howard Cossell - I heard him on the radio. Another popular guy in the 70s was Bob Prince - he didn't appreciate the artificial turf of the new Three Rivers Stadium - and when someone hit a grounder up the middle, he would say - "well we got a bug loose on rug"

    Rest well Mr Cope.

He donated all his money from the towels to the Allegheny Valley school, where his son lived for awhile.

    Simply the best!
  • Rip Myron, have a martini up there with the Gunner
  • As skilow mentioned ,since the early 90's he donated all proceeds of terrible towel money to school for the mentally and physically challenged which came to couple million dollars I believe.Very unselfish, caring man!

    RIP Myron.

There was no place after a Steelers game at Three Rivers like Cope's Cabana for the first year or two it existed. For ten bucks, you could sit in a heated tent outside of the stadium after the game with unlimited Iron City, keilbasa and nachos while Cope did his post-game show. During the comercials, he would sign autographs and down hot toddies - no kidding. By the end of his show, he would be ripped.

He invented the Terrible Towel and later donated all of the proceeds to a special needs school outside of Pittsburgh. He was a class act and a truly unique personality.

Allegheny Valley School obit for Myron
Collector of 1976 Topps baseball for some stupid reason.
Collector of Pittsburgh Pirates cards for a slightly less stupid reason.

Another legend best known to many, myself included, through NFL Films using his calls as part of their Super Bowl films.
