Racing Sport / My 600 CC Go Kart Project

Well, I guess the thread I started last time was deleted , so Let me try this and see if it sticks ,

As some of you know I have been putting together a racing Go Kart

Engine is off of a wrecked 2007 Kawasaki 636 , the fuel injection is proving to be a little abit of a problem because of all the wiring needed , so as far as that part, I will not be doing that work .

I have the axle in , the drive gear , i just picked up the steering wheel and the steering rods that i'll probably install tonight , engine mounts are in { Temporarily }once all the wiring is done and run , I'm going to take it all apart , sand blast the frame , paint it , then slap it all back together . . .

There is still a lot of work to be done . . .but it is going , slow but it is going as planned .

If the thread is not deleted again , I'll continue to add pics .

My nephew and I have been working on this together and it is a lot of fun and I just can not wait to jump on it , it should be an absolute animal !

P.S. pay no attention to my wrecked garage image
I am like a pig down there . . .everything everywhere

I like the concept. I've seen it done before.

    I am wondering if a smaller tank might make it more interesting;
    and lower the COG.

Thanks for the suggestion Mr. Storm , you know that is something I am completely aware of, the center of gravity issue , I don't think I am going to keep it there , it is just something I am kicking around right now , there is no way I need the tank that big , but my son placed it up top like that and it kinda looks cool , Actually the intake is right under the tank there .

Also if anyone out there has any suggestions , I would be very appreciative .

I have not seen any in the US, I have seen many in germany though .

My nephew is putting the build on You Tube , because I am clueless when it comes to computers and stuff , I am lucky just to be able to type . . .I probably type 10 WPM image

Here is a pic , i just popped the tank off the top , there is the intake and just installed one of the steering rods on the right hand side .

Space is becoming an issue as the days progress the tank I think I'm just going to mount on the side , but I also need space for the radiator , i think I am going to mount that on the other side , Tommorow it's going to Kawasaki for wiring .

Being that I am using an 07 motor , fuel injected that is posing a few more problems than just a regular carburated motor , but I'll get it , figuring all these things out is almost as fun . . .

Who the hell am i kiddin , I wanna race this sucker now !!

That looks like a Margay chassis.

I bough the chassis from a guy that had a few just laying around , I paid 150.00 for it , Rolling Chassis is what the guy called it , not too sure of the manufacturer

I have never built one before but I used to have one a while back , it had a 125 cc on it and that thing was an animal !

This engine has about 150 HP and I just hope I don't twist the heck out of everything , I will be welding in more supposrt that is for certain .

In the mid/late 1970s, there were some groups
    in Malibu/HuntingtonBeach/Torrance that did this
    kind of build.

The primary power was Honda 250/350.

They used to race them near where John Wayne
    Airport is now.

They were VERY dangerous, and the profiles were MUCH
lower to the ground than the one in the picture. They
were fairly stable going straight, but turning was
    deathville.

    They were all essentially mini-dragsters.

Some of them had small tanks on top. Some had tiny
bottles on the side. A tank from a smaller bike would
still look kewl. Your big one can probably be cut and
    welded much smaller.

The frame has to be flexible enough, BUT not as flexible
as it appears to be. It will definitely have to stiffened up
considerably to be safe at speeds.

Some of the karts used steering from Austin-Healey Sprites
and MG-Midgets. High-end kart parts will not survive a
    turn under acceleration.

All of my experience was pre-internet, so I do not know if
any of it is documented. I would spend what it takes to
learn how to build it safely; some of the Euro-folks might
    have literature or websites.

As you know, it is not a 35-mph kart.

Yea, there are a few of these carts on You tube , even a 1000cc , I'm definitely adding more cross support for the frame , even with all the weight on it right now , it is surprisingly stiff , but I want to add a little more , weight is really not an issue considering the power to weight ratio .

My 125 cc did about 80 and there is no doubt that this is going to be a lot faster , I will be testing different drive gears on the axel to try to get the best performance out of it/damper the power and I am more than certain lots of this right now are still in the test stage because like I said , I have never built one before , but it's a lot of fun experimenting.

I'm not too sure if I really want to be taking any kind of crazy turns with it , like one would on a regular Go kart , Not that I won't take any turns , but I know I won't be making them at full speed , that is for sure

I just really want to see if I can take out my bike with it in the 1/4 .

I think I am going to smoke it .

But if you ever go on you tube , you can see they do make turns , spin out and all that other stuff .

Before starting this , I thought I was doing something that hasn't been done before as I found out there are quite a few , none I have sen in the U.S. though, that is not to say therre aren't any , I just haven't found one in the U.S. Yet .

All my friends think I am crazy and they all said I can not do it , but that is what fuels me .

But , so much for being original , that part has been blown apart , but it's OK .

Wooo Hooo Just got the 6 Pt harness and the seat delivered !
Going to do downstairs and get to work . . .

I should have some better pics a little later if the thread does not go poof , I hope it don't even though I know this is not Card/ memorabilia realted , But it is kind of sport related and figured some of you guys would be interested in something like this .

I'll get back up a lil later .

Got the seat , got it all tacked in , Now I'm gonna hafta cut the seat just over my shoulders for the intake ports ,
" that I still haven't figured out how to direct "

"Then I still have the right side front engine mount to figure out , have a lil problem there "

    Finish figuring exhaust , Cooling, fuel . . and I am almost there . . .

Almost, but still quite a way off .
Right now i think I might be having an issue with clearance and bottoming out , she isn't touching when I get in it but she does bow and is close to scraping , I still have a lot of welding to do and a few more supports , but I am wondering if that will give me enough strength , I'm hoping after all the reinforcement , a skid plate will help and not hinder?

Happy to put the seat in though , it is starting to make it feel real image

How are you going to attach the skid-plate?
Spotting/tacking it on can be dangerous. The good
ones on large karts are secured with a
    continuous bead.

What is the clearance between the seat-back
    and the goodies?

Are you locked into the wheel/tire decision?

    It looks a little like a death-trap. Wiley-Coyote
    would be proud.

Why don't you just strap a rocket to your backside? That thing is insane! There is no way to get everything out of that engine. You are going to be leaving a lot of HP on the table.

edited to add: I am soooo jealous.

The skid plate would be a continuous bead ,

The motor is about 3" off the seat , there is not much more room than that and I have already extended the chassis 6 inches more than the way it came .

I am not locked into any decision before I fire it up and see how it rolls at low RPM .

As for leaving something on the table as far as power . . .

    That is a no brainer . . .

You get nothing , if you try nothing . . .

    This is purely experimental .

and there is no time limit , other than I wanna jump on it yesterday

When and I get it completed , I'll take it over to the Rube Cave and mount the vulcan gun on it . . .

TNT, I am quite familiar with that chassis having owned a number of them. What kind of drive system are you going to use (belt/chain)? Also, is this going to be a straight line only or are you planning on being able to turn this thing? Shoot me a pm and I may be able to give you some insight.
