1996 Ireland 5P Doubling???

Found this in a bulk lot of world coins I won tonight at a local auction. I'm not quite sure what to make of it. Doubled (maybe tripled) die, just machine doubling, a worked die, who knows. I don't have another 5P to judge it against, but I have a hard time thinking it's normal. Rev looks like it was struck slightly off-center as well. The Obv has some slightly similar doubling on the date and Erie as well. Sort of reminds me of Longacre doubling more than anything else, as the extra lines go more than 1 direction in places. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Jeff

You may have something there. I have looked at all my 1996 5Ps and did not find this doubling on any of them. It is not uncommon to find mis-strikes on later Irish coinage. I have found this with some of my 1,2 pence coins I have a couple that are struck off center. I even looked over my other 5 pence from other years prior and did not find any doubling like this. Very interesting find.

Thanks MSD61, here's the other side, not as dramatic. It's definitely something, just not sure what yet. image

Yes interesting coin. As you say it appears as if there is a ghost image right around the bull. The doubling is more evident to the top and the back of the bull. It has possibly been struck more than twice.

I agree the coin looks like it has indeed been struck more than twice. There appears to be some die clashing there at the base of the far right hind quarter of the bull at the hoof area.

    Very cool, Jeff!

You're developing an eagle eye. (Well, for all I know, you've always had it).

I found you a couple more 1971 coins yesterday. One of these days I need you to PM me a list of what countries and denominations you have. I found some more 1971 Mexican pesos but I knew you already had those. Tryin' to remember what I found this last time around.

Eh, I forget. When I save up ten or so I can ship them to you. I have a lot more cherrypicking to do, of course, so some more are bound to show up as I go crashing through the giant hoard.

    That 5p is image

maybe it was struck with the wrong amount of pressure causing some of the metal to bleed like that?

Thanks Rob, I'll make a list when I get a chance.

One of the "Guru's" answered via PM, his belief was:

I believe it to be an unusual form of die deterioration doubling. I suspect it's due to premature breakdown of a chrome layer covering the die face.

Another coin for the "Interesting" pile.
