Why does this bother you so much?

They used file photos so what? lol

Did it ever occur to you that back then they had maybe 1 month
to get all the new players photo'd, then they had to have the strippers
do their job and then get printing started all within a month?

I do not think laziness had anything to do with this. Logistics was likely
    the issue.

If they already had a player in file they re used it.

Not sure what the issue is here.

    Good for you.
  • I'm sure kids in the 60s were really concerned with the photography on baseball cards.

I was more concerned when the piece of gum started to get smaller.

I remember when the gum was the same size as the card!

    Good for you.
  • It's easy to criticize something that's 40-50 years old and no one around to defend it.

    If was a small operation.

    Sy Berger was it.

Photography? He hired part-timers to take pictures at Yankee Stadium, Ebbets Field and the Polo Grounds. That was basically it.

Berger designed the backs of the cards on his kitchen table!
He was a pioneer in modern day baseball card and he BELONGS in the Hall of Fame.

He brought as many kids into the game as Ted Williams and Willie Mays.

I first collected cards in 1958. Only a few games were telecast and they were in black-and-white on a fuzzy screen. There were no national broadcasts except the World Series and the All-Star game. Other than those two games (and Home Run Derby) your only connection to MLB was the 25-cent Sporting News and baseball cards.

The All Star game was awesome in the early 70s when I was a kid because all year long all you got to see was your home teams. It's just not the same now that you can see any game/team you want at any given time.
  • Back then, many of the players were myths that you tracked in the boxscores

<< <i>I'm sure kids in the 60s were really concerned with the photography on baseball cards. >>

    True for me Lee.

We bought the pack - first - for the gum.

Then we looked for our favorite players and the our all important "team card" - no critiques on player photos, registration, centering - we didn't care.

Topps - back then - was in the gum business - the cards were a premium - we played with them - traded and flipped - carried in a rubber banded stack in the ass pocket of your Levi's.

Thanx to Beckett and the modern day collecting style - kids will never know that type of enjoyment.

Although in the 21st century - collecting is different Celesterussell - back then it was a nickle and dime business IMO. I think ya can cut them a little slack - don't ya think?

  • boy, just having a little fun pointing out some details. Cards have been a big part of my life as well...

the point being we can reminisce about it, and I like to do the same, but the shortcuts were because of no competition.

They would not survive today with the same level of quality control.....

funny thing is, some sets were stunning (in my opinion) 1957, 1965, 1967 , 1969 etc but others were clunkers (in my opinion) 1962, 1973, 1970(so-so).

And I mean so-so as in average, not Magilla Gorilla's monkey sidekick...

  • Isn't that why there was gum in the pack? They wanted gum sales, not card sales...early on at least?

1967 is the worst set of the 60's. Boring design if you can call putting the team name on a photo a design. I hate the Mantle in that set, it really shows what the alcohol abuse has done to break him down. The rookie design in the set was a little better.

Before anyone tries to say that 1968 is worse, so what if they used the new 60's style wallpaper as a border? It also hides corner wear so even after you carry your cards around for a week in your pocket they still look new.

  • << <i>Isn't that why there was gum in the pack? They wanted gum sales, not card sales...early on at least? >>

I was looking through Wikipedia about the various card companies. Some very interesting stuff about lawsuits between Topps and Fleer, etc. And you're right, gum was the actual product. Hard to fathom. To me and my friends in the early 70's, the cardboard gum was fun to chomp, but we only had eyes for the cards.

  • Right, at some point, the gum became secondary to the cards. Not sure when that happen, but I remember trying to hunt down quarters and dollars to buy packs of Topps in 1980. I chewed the gum, but I bought them for the cards.

I will start a discussion on the 10 most influential baseball card dealers in Bergen County New Jersey......

    Tough debate--here are mine.

    10. Jeremiah Herzog--He invented cello packs.
    9. Peter LePlaca--First guy to carry OPC hockey east of the Mississippi.
    8. Daniel O' Keefe--Kept every card in his inventory including commons in screw down cases.
    7. Craig Hartmann--Once double crossed a mid level underworld figure by selling him some resealed Wax Boxes. Although his store is still thriving, his whereabouts have been unknown for years.
    6. Mike Seith--Had the biggest shop in the county and then suddenly he lost his business after it was discovered he was part of a tryst with gay New Jersey govenor.
    5. Joe Jascur--Once traded a T206 Wagner for 50 Craig Jefferies rookie cards (Donruss, not Fleer).
    4. David Hall--Took out full page ads in Tuff Stuff for years using the nickname "The Garbage Pale Kid" Man.
    3. Steve Creeley--Very supersticious. Would only sell Philadelphia Football cards to people who could prove that they were residence of Philadelphia.
    2. Don Mitas--For the first six years of his business he actually slept at night (naked) in the glass display cases in his store.
    1. Kevin Noonan--Founded Gem Grading services.
  • also, in Bergen County and I remember this like it was yesterday..

I had a big argument/fight with card dealer at a show up there. He had a huge table with thousands of cards.

A kid of about 12 or so wanted to buy Phil Niekro's rookie card. He proceeded to tell the kid that the 1965 card was the rookie card and not he 64, by telling him some BS (he even had the card in a plastic top loader that said (rookie Card) (wow, what an invention that was, it was better than sliced bread).

I pointed out to the kid that the dealer was wrong and it was not his rookie card and a big argument ensued.

well i guess their are goniffs in every profession...

For the OP to say: great effort...ha - is not very inspiring and not gonna get people excited about discussing these issues.

If ya wanna have a constructive discussion on Topps cards - fine - but I don't think anyone is gonna be inspired with words like that.

I get excited about talking about baseball cards - I like when people talk about the different issues - the nuances of the set - the fact that Topps recycled - but - there just seems to be a subtle difference between pointing out details and the feeling that the product is being slammed - and saying "great effort...ha" feels more like a slam?

You're saying that some people are arbitrating what others can talk about.

On the contrary - they were stating THEIR opinion - defend away - but don't think some are gonna sit back and just take that crap.

And, yes - someone who doesn't participate regularly here is in NO position to dictate that people be ignored.

In fact - if he ignores THEM - his thread will die on the vine - because frankly - he doesn't have a lot of supporters of the premise - that is: relative to Topps - "and on and on - what effort ha"

As Winpitcher said - it's like 2 or 3 threads about it - like we haven't heard that Topps recycles pics? It's singing to the choir out of tune IMO.

So, if you want to take my statement that personally - hey - I can live with that - what the hell do you think I'm gonna do? Go home and cry to my mommy?

Clearly, this is the type of person who lives his life online. His 'value' is based on how many posts he accumulates. Me, I enjoy reading threads that are interesting to me. I usually reply/trade/whatever via PM or e-mail. I don't give one crap how many posts I tally and I've been collecting baseball cards since 1972, so I have some time put into the hobby. So he wants to be rude to me and thinks I'm not going to respond because he's some sort of revered member of the boards?? Huh?

I find it incredibly humorous, the groupthink that happens here. How in hell do you read this thread and say I'm the one who started the rudeness?? Take off the blinders. The problem will always be with arrogant high-count posters who think they're above everyone. And a few of them have jumped into this thread. I, personally, would like to see more info from the OP.
Always looking to trade 1957 to 1971 baseball cards!

Your buddy there, Mr. 12,000+, was slamming him.

Dude, you're wrong. Jesus effin Christ. Can you read?? I was telling the OP to ignore the negative people or whatever.

    Really?

So who exactly is mr 12.000?

I think you need to relax. I understood what you said perfectly. Every step of the way.

Maybe it is you that needs to learn how to read or at the least remember what you said!

For a person that took such exception to what Mike said to you, you surely acted the hypocrit thereafter.

yes and that is where you were rude. You can twist this anyway you want.

The bottom line is no one was rude, perhaps you took it that way and thus

that is why we are where we are now.

It really is not a big deal.

<< <i>Some people just want you to talk about what they want to talk about. Ignore 'em. >>

What is this? A guy who has 50 posts in a year and half is gonna criticize the participation. >>

    Jack

I can sure see how this has gone way too far.

My reference to your post count goes to participation in a sense that you did criticize - you said they only want to talk about what they want? It wasn't necessarily true and as a limited participant here - that can be taken the wrong way - see it from our POV - we don't like being told that either.

I tried to say - that's not true - they were just stating their opinion - and the reference to Topps - WHAT AN EFFORT, HA - can be inflammatory and some people are gonna respond to that.

You're making way too much about his.

I was not using your post count against you - I'm no an elitist and I think you've been far more insulting to me than my little reference about the count.

I apologize if it was offensive - I was just responding in the context of the situation - not trying to single you out.

However, the remarks you made about me and my time is was immensely repugnant and unnecessary - I think you need to go back and see what I said and then how you went on the attack.

This is the last I'm gonna say on this subject.

And thanx for the kind words.

Ok, trying to get back somewhat on topic here back in the early 60's
I bought the product for the cards first and the gum second.

I would think it was always that way on the buyer side.

As for the topps side I think in the beginning they were trying to push gum.

When they started to focus more on card sales as opposed to gum I have no idea

maybe around 1957 when the cards got smaller?

As for the laziness issue between 1952 and 56 those cards were drawn and no one can say topps was
    lazy then.

As was mentioned already, budget and time constraints played a huge factor in Topps' lack of quality control. I too opened the packs for the cards first, and then I would jam as many sticks of gum in my mouth until it was unchewable. Celesterussell, your point in all 72 threads you started is well made and understood. Topps wasn't perfect. There I said it.
