Anyone ever rip a box of 84 donruss?

Would love to hear some stories and get an idea of what you usually get out of a box.

It has been almost 24 years.

I had befriended a lady who ran a card shop for her husband. None of the wholesalers in the local area had boxes, but she found a wholesaler about an hour drive, but they would not deliver. So every couple of weeks I would get boxes for her (and pick up a couple for myself) using her resale exemption. I probably ended up buying about 30 boxes for myself.

I never ripped a box, but part of me could never believe the supposed scarcity of that set. I bought a set for $20 sometime in 1984, and then shortly after the price/value just exploded on it.

How was I able to get a set so "cheap" and easily?

im like alfonz, many moons ago ,when 83-84 stuff was worth something raw wioth all the great hofers boggs/sandbergs/gwynns rcs and mattinglys strawberrys

Around here they were putting out 1984's in the spring of 1985 because they hadn't sold. One store sold me a couple of boxes for about $6.00 a box because I complained about them being the previous year's cards. A month or so later, 84's skyrocketed. Went to local wholesaler, and as usual, I was late pulling the trigger, he had sold all he had at cost to somebody from out of the area who was going to all the small wholesalers and buying up 1984's.

Collation wasn't very good as I remember. Know I had a hard time getting Mattinglys - one every two to three boxes.
