topps history series, distribution

Although baseball cards are a big part of our "lives", very little seems to be know about how vintage BB cards were distributed, etc.

For example, I once read where topps actually had a formula in deciding what players cards were included in a particular series.

Does anybody out there know any details on this.

Also, please notice how the last or next to last series of cards always included fringe players (especially in the 1959 and 1969 and 1972 sets) who were not originally expected to make the team.

Obviously, this means that these cards were printed after the season started.

Also, the 1969 Dick Ellsworth shows him as an indian even though he was traded to them at the end of april, 1969.

This leads me to my second point, does anybody have any "history " of how long each series was out until the next series was issued and tryically, when the series were issued.

I do know for example that for example the final series of 1972 was in stores at mid July. I also know thru my cluttered mind that the 3rd series 1969 cards were issued around the 25th or so of April, as it happened to be the day of report cards.

Anybody like to contribute to this post?

thanks

These are things I would love to know about as well. Why don't you cut and paste the exact same post and start a thread on the Sports Cards & Memorabilia forum where it will get more exposure, and hopefully some answers.

why is there no houston astros team card in the 1966 set?

there are no world series card commerating the prior year in the 1966 set either, which was the common practice for sets around that time.

i think we all can figure out that stars (or at least people they thought were stars) have the 50's and 00's.

the 1966 set has koufax 100 matthews 200 clemente 300 mvp zolio veralles 400 and aaron 500
50 is mantle, 150 colovito, 250 sammy ellis! 350 stottlemyre, 450 oliva and 500 mccovey.
  • you are right

no 1968 cub red sox yankee giant or senators team card in 68.

a 1968 red sox team card would be expensive had it been isued.

also no chris short of philly issued in 65 or 66. thats why only big D and koufax on the 65 nl era leaders card, he was third.

no rick clark card in 1968 despite him leading angels in wins in 67.
