Ugh, it's been a long night.

So I'm watching an auction for a signed 1962 Johnny Unitas that's PSA/DNA Authenticated. We're within 30 second of the close of the auction, I refresh the bidding, and it says "0 bids". I place another bid and win the auction. I take a look at the auction history and see that the seller was cancelling bids at the close of the auction. I figured that it's a lost cause and realize that's the case when I receive a message from the seller.

It says that they were looking to get x for the auction and that they'll be willing to let it go if I agree to pay that amount. In case you are wondering, there was no reserve. And for the record, the seller has feedback of over 800 and is at 99.5% positive.

that sucks...i have had that happen more than once...if they wanted a certain amount then they should have put a reserve on it...

Send him payment at your winning auction price and tell him that you expect him to complete the transaction and that you will file an "Item Not Received" claim with Ebay and report him as a non-performing seller if he does not complete the transaction.

Should be just the type of guy Ebay is trying to catch with their new focus on improving the quality of sellers....

He is required to use a reserve, if he wants a minimum price.

BUT, EBAY cannot make him sell.

Thanks for the feedback. The problem with leaving a neg is that of course I'll get one in return.

The funny thing is that I just got a message that said that they've thought about it and decided that they're just going to keep the card. At least they were nice enough to include the word "Sorry" at the end of their message.

For entertainment purposes only I decised to go ahead and send one more message. I asked what their stance is on winning bidders who refuse to pay for items. It won't do any good, but I figured that I should send one more message. It's been a long day and I figured that I was entitled to that much.

Once everything went down with the 1962, I decided to go on and get a signed 1960 that me and the TNBanker were watching. I would've rather had the 1962, but I can live with this one. Although it'll get put in a slab, I'm confident that it's legit from the messages I've swapped with the seller.

This is a great reason as to why the new feedback system is needed!

This seller was canceling bids as the auction was ending because he felt it wouldn't sell for his price?

What a creep.

All he had to do was start the auction at a price he was confortable with.

I'd neg him.

I would still file a NSS complaint with Ebay as well as reporting him for reserve fee advoidance.

This is one situation where the new system will benefit. However IF it goes into effect these sellers will be the first culled from the pack. Good sellers will not have anything to worry about.

I did go ahead and file a complaint. If for nothing else, it will give me some leverage if the guy decides to slam me with a negative. Considering that what he did last night was the second time to do so, he's going to have to make it look like I didn't pay him to be able to relist it.

As I just mentioned, it was the second time that the seller had the card listed just to cancel the bids of everyone as the auction was closing. Talk about a risky strategy. Had someone else not placed a bid on it I would've had the auction won at $.01

Or better yet, just make the starting bid whatever their minimum sell price is.

So I sent my message to the seller and he responds that he understands and agrees with my frustration and ends with another apology. Personally I'm not sure why he expects to get $250 for a signed 1962 Unitas. Yes it's a nice card, but I'm thinking that I got my signed '59 for either $275 or $285 and I'll be the first to admit that I overpaid.

I hope he's this friendly when he finds out I reported him.

I guess this is how the story ends. I sent a note explaining that I had to report him with a note reiterating my frustration. I explained that ultimately my reasoning for the report is due to the fact that I don't want to look like a non paying bidder once he relists it. I also explained that I need to have some leverage in the event that I get hit with a negative.

I won't post the entire message, but here's the 2 points in it:

1) It's not getting relisted
2) He would be "pretty low down to leave negative feedback"

Personally, I would call it pretty low down to not give something to a seller for the winning bid.
