Would you spend the additional money to attempt to get this 56 Mantle bumped from a 2 to a 3 if it w

I just picked up this 1956 Mickey Mantle PSA 2. I haven’t done a whole lot of graded cards, but I’ve read a lot on here about people cracking and resubmitting and getting a better grade. To me, this card looks better than a 2. I wanted to ask the resident experts and see if they thought it had a chance to be upgraded to a 3 if I crack it out and resubmit. It looks better than 3’s of a lot of other cards, but I don’t want to waste money on additional grading fees if people whom have a lot more “grading” knowledge than I don’t think it would make the cut.

The card has two minor surface wrinkles that are barely visible across the face of the card from the right side across the chin and collar and two minor surface wrinkles that go from just above the name area to just below the name area. As you can see from the scans, you can’t really see them looking straight on, you have to tilt it at an angle to see them. None of these wrinkles break the paper or effect the back of the card.
Please let me know your thoughts on if you think it could grade a 3, and if it was yours, if you would take the chance and spend the additional funds to crack it and resubmit it.

Given the number of wrinkles, I'd say it sounds like a 2. And I'm not sure that a possible bump from 2 to 3 is enough to justify the expense of resubmitting it. I'd just leave it as is - it's a good lookin' card for the grade.

    I must say "no."

  • Mike,

Another option would be not to crack and resubmit for a half-point upgrade.

There is NO reason not to do that.

Cracking it has a whole different set of risks.

The only risk in going for the .5 is the sub fee.

Since NONE of us know for sure what a .5 really
looks like, I would wait a few weeks.

Here is my 1955 Jackie Robinson PSA 3 that's going on eBay tonight. Your PSA 2 is much nicer than my PSA 3. I say crack it and send it in. 1956 Mantles Avg. $175 to $200 in PSA 2 and $300 in PSA 3.

Worth a resubmit in my opinion.
