How many memorabilia cards are out there?

I saw this comment on Beckett and thought it was worth passing on to those who may not have seen it. The word of the day is wow:

"In the more than 10 years since the history-making advent of the memorabilia card, there have been 416,739 memorabilia cards produced, an average of 34,728 cards per year, since 1996.

This does NOT include multiples of the same card."

  • Hence the reason why most modern memorabilia cards have very little value or demand. I wonder what the next big thing is going to be?

I agree, there is little demand for that 2006 Topps Trent Green jersey swatch, but there are hundreds of people who come into my store with 50 of em wanting a mere 500 for all. Beckett inflates the prices on these to the point that I have considered selling to that advertiser that offers $1.50 for any memorabilia card. I have about 200 rotting,
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY

I don't where the rest are but I got about 3 of them
  • Sorta disappointing that so mant have been made. Because really, where can you go beyond the autos and memorabilia cards? I guess keep producing them, just in lesser quantities. Though I only have 2 of them, so I'd love to get more.

.....and that is one reason, of many, why I rarely, if ever, buy new cards today.
  • The astounding thing to me about the numbers is the fact that so many of these have had editions well into the hundreds. Taking it a step further, the article never defined "memorabilia". For all of the jersey/patch cards, there are a ton of cards with seat pieces from stadiums.

Is there anyone playing in any of the sports today you would like to collect? For example I like to collect some modern for the reason of collecting players I now like to watch play currently.

I remember seeing an interview - just can't remember - on YouTube where a representative from Topps or UD admits they've produced millions.

That's just way too much stuff - and of course - big money is being spent and sometimes ya wind up with "crap!" These are auto cards not the memorabilia card that he was referring to.

I guess this guy told it like it was.

Same here. Also, to just keep current w/ the hobby. Face it, if you plan on collecting 20 years from now, then cards that to us are garbage will be "vintage' then. Okay, maybe not ALL of them, but some!

Lee, why would the roll of fabric be stained?
  • JeremyDie1JeremyDie1 Posts: 2,383 ✭✭✭
Maybe half or more of the memorabilia are now event worn. Not game used.
