That's a very cool set. I remember seeing someone's webpage where they had the whole set listed and scanned. Beautiful in high grade too. Good luck!

  • My first set is about a 4-6 range with the second 3-4. The picture was the only one I had, just in case someone was unfamiliar with the T118 set. I know that Griffins has the "king " of graded T118 sets and I was out bid by him to purchase the 2nd best set when it came up for sale recently.

Actually the 2nd best set was offered to me offline and I cherry picked the ones I needed, and then bid on the rest since they seemed to be going quite low. I then sent the 2nd set off to a friend in a trade.
This is my favorite non sports set- incredible print quality, color, and selection of personalities. The poles had just been reached, Africa had yet to be fully mapped and it was be 43 years before someone reached the highest mountain and lived to tell of it. These guys (and women) were really blazing untrod ground- Stanley, Livingston, Hudson, Shackleton and the others.
They're also really hard to find in nice shape. 6's are tough, and there has only been 1 7 graded.
I just started (and almost completed) a similar set, the T68 Men of History/Heroes of History. 4 times the amount of cards, but very similar in terms of quality of design, printing, selection, etc. If you interested in a similar set that is a bit more challenging I'd highly recommend it.
Congrats on the completion of the T118's James!

  • Thanks. I saw that you had a few for sale. Just a little costly for me. I will look to buy them if my sub comes back lower that those 5's.

The T68 is more challenging!! I have only seen a few offered for sale and mostly poor- good range.

There was a set of T68's on ebay last week, went for about $2400. There is another set closing in SCP/Sotheby's this week.

  • Just my opinion,

But these "type" of cards look SO MUCH BETTER in SGC holders..

The solid black of the SGC holder really brings out the wonderful coloring of these cards.

Not PSA bashing,,, just calling it like i see it.

Lee, although I haven't seen any of them in SGC holders, they must be beautiful to look at. The colors would just pop off of that black background.

Anyone know of a 'cheap' low grade set available? What would it run?

  • Arny,
A "cheap low grade" set has run me about $3/card to see and upgrade my first set. Someone just had the set up for $74.99 for the set in that good/poor grade. It did not get any bids.

I sold a mid grade raw set (probably 3's and 4's) for $250 and another lesser one for $200.
Depends on your definition of low grade.

Oh wow, that's a lot lower than I expected.

If anyone knows of any PSA 3-5 level sets, please let me know. It would be great to have them graded by SGC with that year-long special that they are running.

I completed a low- to mid-grade raw set of these awhile back and have been upgrading when I can... It doesn't seem like these show up on eBay nearly as often as they used to, though.

I'd especially like to find a decent Adolphus Greely. The one I have is off-register, off-center and beat up. A few months ago, through my subscription to an eBay search for all things Aldophus Greely, I came across an autograph of his... and on a whim put in what I thought was kind of a low bid and won it, to my surprise. Kinda cool, but now it's one of those things where I look at it and think.... why in the world do I have this.

Of course, I scan everything I get these days and store it all in my Photobucket account... here's a link for the 118 set.

  • I have found that Henson and hudson are my hardest to get in ex condition.

Woo hoo! Got my first graded copies....I absolutely LOVE these in the SGC holders...the scans cannot do them justice. They look so much more like works of art!

They will be crossed over to SGC (unless you think that I can't pull a direct cross as far as grades go)......

  • They look to good in SGC holders not to cross over. Also with the $5 per card you can not beat the cost.

Arny---- I see that you got cards from SGC. How much was the shipping/handling? About the same as PSA? Also how are the POP # in SGC?
I saw that there is only one registered set.

I actually bought those SGCs from someone that had already graded them. I've got a lot of about 10 to 12 cards that I'll be going over and then submitting to SGC (if they look at least 5ish) along with my set of '87 Wrestling cards.

I haven't looked at the POP #s yet for the SGC cards, but I haven't seen many of these around.
