Casualties of the 1/2 point upgrade - grades popped

Grades popped and are quite a mess. I think PSA has certainly opened themselves up to some criticism in that they have given no opportunity to wait until the new grading has taken affect for cards already sent in. I sent a message to PSA requesting to wait until new grading was implemented, as it seems the grading has been a bit inconsistent at best lately, but got no response. At least 5 of the 8's here I was sure were 9's if not 10's. Makes one wonder if they are looking for the resub fees. I carefully selected all of these items from about 150 from the era. In terms of quality control I had 3 mechanical errors in 15 cards which seems a little outside of the norm. Customer service was very good in explaining the process for correcting the flips and was also willing to correct a card that I had purchased privately that had the wrong flip when I send the cards back in.

For clarification:
The 88 Topps is the Gretzky All Star Sticker, not Gilles Meloche who is actually#8 in the regular set
The 90 Score Mark Messier, is the 91 Score Canadian Gretzky and is one sweet card in this condition, has the Red Border.
The 90 Upper Deck #241 is the Gretzky UD Promo, not Allan Bester from the regular issue.

These cards were clearly marked on the sub form and all Gretzky's so I have to question the process in packaging these, and reviewing before they go out the door (Alan Bester?).

Sorry for the rant but here are the grades:

LINE # CERT # CARD CARD CO. CARD # CARD NAME VARIETY GRADE

11 03099503 1992 BOWMAN 1 WAYNE GRETZKY N/A 9
12 03099504 1992 BOWMAN 207 WAYNE GRETZKY FOIL 8 (9, but tough to read the foil cards sometimes)
13 03099505 1991 PINNACLE 100 WAYNE GRETZKY N/A 9
14 03099506 1985 O-PEE-CHEE 222 WAYNE GRETZKY N/A 9
15 03099507 1985 O-PEE-CHEE GREG GILBERT-75 WAYNE GRETZKY-202 5 (No idea, but if 2 graders saw this a 5 must be a 5).

Doesn't appear that the market likes what CU is doing right now. In all fairness the market has been going down, but not by this much - that's quite a stock price drop since December 14th. Hopefully they can turn it around.

Six days ago the stock was $11.21, a month ago it was $10.50, not bad in a tough market. The market has crashed in the last five days, why would you be surprised that this stock is down?

  • Based on that stock pattern I would hit it for a quick little turn around. Thats really not that bad considering how much the market has tanked in the last few days.

this was my fear.. that I posted before.. but after some thought I let both my bulk and regular subs ride...
hoping that the cards would be graded correctly.. and a lot out of anxiousness seeing that my 5 day sub has already been
there for 2 weeks.. and my bulk sub took 2 weeks to get logged in.. didnt want to push it back another 3 weeks..

I hope it works out in my favor.. and I am putting trust in them.. I guess suffice to say that future submissions rely on these being graded accurately.. with integrity

The stock was at $13 on January 8th - now it's below $10 - that's a big percentage decrease in two weeks in any market.
  • Graded Accuratey? With Integrity? Are you kidding? How are they going to get money money from you by doing that.

I think it is quite obvious that PSA has been engaging in undergrading to insure their "under the table" Resubmit program.

  • Good day,
I went the oppisite way and confered with Customer service (Laura Rosenberg) and chose to have them hold both of my Subs till the first and get them done under the new grading guidelines. 11 card Sub with a 1979 OPC Ozzie Smith, was sure of an 8 with an outside shot at a 9, now should definitly be an 8.5. Second one 112 card mostly Non Sport from 1936-1970's. There are 45 each 1953 Who-Z-At Stars which should have been about 15-25 8's before, I am really scared that some of them are going to come back as 7.5's. Also there were three of those that I thought had a shot at the very first MINT 9's ever awarded to this set, I'll bet they come back as 8.5's now

Actually Collect Non Sport, but am just so full of myself I post all over the place !!!!!!!

that was why I let them roll.. I have one that i think is a 9.. super rare.. and I was afraid if I waited.. it would be 8.5...

I agree with this point. Of course graders have been told to hammer grades the past several months. I know of multiple people that have not changed THEIR grading standards in the least and grades have been consistently falling by at least one grade on average.

    Who would even question this?

I don't blame PSA for doing this - it's actually a smart business move. Make people hate the current grade and "want" to resubmit it for a higher grade.
  • Hello,

The new half grades do not start until February 1st so your order will have the current grading standards.

    Thank you,

I decided to let my last sub which was logged on Jan. 17 ride with the old grading standards as well. I'm hoping to get them back before I go buy some more "raw" off a certain dealer on Feb. 9. 5 of the 6 cards I submitted are from this dealer.
  • Should have seen this coming from a mile away ...

You don't really believe that two graders review mid-'80s hockey stickers, do you?

Meloche. Gretzky. Close enough, I guess.
