OT - Anyone going to the Hollywood Park Show

I've never been. Anyone know if there is any vintage at these shows?

    Hi Stuart,

I have been a couple of times and always had a good time. Have tried Friday night before, but a lot of the dealers were not there. Saturday seems to be best for selection. There is a LOT of vintage both graded and raw.

PS...did you get my 68 list? Let me know when your going and could exchange cards.

  • When is it happening?

    this weekend Bobby.
There is always some vintage there, but it's pretty sparse compared to the National, and from what I hear Ft. Washington. It pretty much depends on what you call vintage (pre WW2 for me) and what sort of condition you're looking for.
I found Friday to be a waste of time since so many are not set up. You can go thru the entire show in about an hour.

  • I thought Hollywood Park was a race track/casino. Are you telling me there is a card show at a casino?

yup- a pretty low stakes casino at that. Walking thru on the way to the show can be pretty depressing.

  • The hours for Hollywood Park are 2-8 on Friday, and 10-6 on Saturday and Sunday. Last year I went on a Friday and had to wait for over an hour to open, this year I think I will go on Saturday to see if there are more dealers.

  • Well, the show was worse than I expected. There was about 40 dealers less than the last show. I took $300 and only spent $40. I could not find anything to spend my cash on. I drove 45 minutes there and walked through the heavy rain to pay $9.00 to get in the door and spent most of my time with a dealer I see at the Frank and Sons show. This show is surviving on life support, they should take it out back on end the suffering.

There were lines for all the autograph guests, but I laughed when they made the announcement" In order to keep the lines moving and for all people to get autographs, Please, no questions, photographs or handshakes with the signers." I wonder if you were allowed to look at them. I guess Kirk Gibson really is that busy.

Tons and Tons of modern graded Beckett, it was on every table. Very few Psa vintage cards. Dealers explained that they just don't move same thing with the common cards for set builders. Same dealers had the same old overpriced cards in the cases. Hard to expect someone to pay 125-150% of SMR because it is a Dodger or Yankee card. I am tired of dealers asking for 150% of SMR for their PSA 8's because it is closer to a PSA 9.

I don't mind paying a little extra to help the dealer pay for his table, but full SMR with no negotiating is tough. It is really hard to beat Ebay. Let the bidders decide the vale of the cards.

    Sorry for the rant.

I agree. The show was terrible for graded card buyers. I'm not really into modern at all, which took up most tables, and those few dealers who had some nice cards wanted ridiculous prices (150% or more of eBay averages). I saw a nice 1960 Koufax 8 that I wanted, dealer was firm at 375. Ridiculous.

I expect to pay more at shows, and SMR can be really far off (I always check vcp instead) but agreed that things were a touch insane. Besides that, the selection was really poor.
They moved the outside tables inside because of the expected rain and it was probably a good thing, as there wasn't as much inside activity as usual even with the extra tables in there.
The crowd Saturday morning was much lighter than usual. I'm working on some Heritage sets along with a bunch of vintage (which I've pretty much given up on finding at that show) and even that was sparse. Did pick up a few '07's from a guy, even though they were several times what they go for on ebay, even with shipping.
Had breakfast with a bunch of friends before the show and we all agreed it had become more a catalyst for socializing than actually buying. 6 months and 2 days til the National- I"m sure that will be considerably better.

I was going to go, but I woke up late and decided to train for the L.A. Marathon instead. After reading your posts, good thing I didn't go.

  • I have been able to get good deals when I spend over a $100 on assorted mid-grade raw vintage with a couple of dealers. Sometimes there is some discounts on modern wax, since they don't want to take it home. However, I don't go to the show much anymore. I haven't been since 2006.
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!
  • I was lucky enough to find close to 100 raw cards. probably the best show for me in a few years.

Here's some scans of a good portion of what I bought. Didn't pay over high beckett for any of them

  • Treetop... nice pickups. Love to see the raw card scans from show-buys.
  • I decided to go to Hollywood Park again even though I didn't have much sucess before. The vintage cards were very disappointing. Very few that I would classify in the PSA 6 range. The few that were nice the prices were way too high. One dealer I talked to said that he does about $500.00 at the show and about $10,000 at the National. He told me to go to the Nationals. Only problem Hollywood park is 20 miles away and Chicago is over 2000 miles away. I think the only way I would go back to Hollywood Park is to submit cards to PSA to avoid the shipping costs.
