What percentage of SMR would you pay for BVG or GAI graded cards?

Just got back from a nice day of skiing and noticed that a card I had on my Ebay watchlist had ended before I got home.

It was a 1963 GAI 9 Willie Mays #300, which SMR has at $2400. Final price was $781, which is about 33% of SMR.

My question to everyone on the board is what percentage of SMR (or VCP for those who subscribe) would you generally be willing to pay for a GAI or BVG graded card in a similar grade?

Would this depend on whether you were buying the card as an investment or for your personal collection?

  • I wouldn't touch a GAI graded card with the new flip. I would probably give like 50% for a GAI with the older flip and 70% for a BVG - all depending on the card of course.

For mid-grade (4-6) Pre-War, I would say about 75-80% of what I would pay for the same card in a SGC or PSA holder. Less than that for higher grades.

Later vintage (50's-60's) if it is mid-grade it really dosen't make a difference to me (buy the card not the holder), if it is high grade (8's) - I try to avoid altogether (at least my bids never come through).

  • Depends on the card....many cards i would pay MUCH more than the SMR, other cards i wouldn't pay 1% of SMR. Generally catalog values mean nothing to me.
