Blast From The Not So Distant Past 1991 Donruss Elite Ryne Sandberg Auto And What We Sold It For In

Thought some on here might get a kick out of this.

My Dad had picked up 10 packs of 1991 Donruss while on a trip to Pennsylvania (if memory serves me correctly he bought them in late December of 1990 or possibly very early Jan 1991) and when he got home he gave me 5 and he kept 5. I opened mine and didn't get anything to brag about but he comes to me and asks if the card he pulled was anything special.

Don't have a pic of the actual card so I'll borrow a scan from eBay.

Talk about luck. Well we took it around to a few places and even had one joker at a Bangor area card shop tell us he had a stack of 100 of them out back and they weren't worth anything. Can't remember where we finally went (thinking it was in the Ellsworth area) and found a dealer that paid the following.

Actual receipt that the dealer made out.

Not sure why he made it out as ***/1000 because there are 5,000 of the card but $350 for the card was really a good amount to get for it.

If I had pulled it I know that I would still have it as it was a really beautiful looking card.

well i opened a few boxes and pulled one myself. i had it psa/dna slabbed a year or so ago. it came back an 8 one of the highest graded so far. it was the first auto card i ever pulled and probably one of the first ever included in packs.

  • nice story. i remember collecting donruss back in the early 90's and those cards were really popular. Beckett always hyped them up in their issues. I never was lucky tearing up packs as a kid...i would have pee'd my pants if I busted a pack and found that in it.

Didn't see any in the completed auctions but there is one buy-it-now up at $149.99 (Beckett book price is $150.00 not that book price means anything) with the best offer and it has one offer retracted and one pending.
