Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is

Sorry for the blatent title but I wanted to draw people to participate here. There are a lot of very vocal proponents and detractors for the new 0.5 grading system. This is your chance to "put your money where your mouth is" so to speak. Post here to state whether you are for or against the new grading system and post your registry sets. I'd like to get a feel for which types of collectors support and protest this change.

Me first: I'm against it.

I am neutral on the issue. I don't love it but as long as they use new flips I do not plan to re-grade anything.

I have ZERO registry sets but one day I will have the #1 Larry Allen set! image

Edit: Why is my post coming ahead of yours Gem? PSA sucks. I quit.

My listed sets (for the time being, anyway) 97 total, with another 4-5 that won't be listed after all, and 5 sets that were going to be submitted for grading next week at the show that won't be now.

I against it in principle, but it won't hurt me overly too much.

I have a '63 Topps Set complete with commons in 7s, and I've been upgrading the stars to high end eights. I've actually got about five or six cards I would have sent to SGC before selling to try to get the bump to a 92. Now if/when I decide to sell I'll re-send them to PSA.

I do think Topps star cards in "8" are going to take a decent decline on Ebay sales. Most dealers won't give their cards away.

Truthfully I don't see how this will make a lot of resubmissions on commons, but who knows.

I'm waiting on a batch of '51 Bowmans and a few TAAs in high grade.

I refuse to put them in the registry before I have them in hand...

Edited to add: Don't care one way or the other for the .5 grade. I'll probably send a handful in to be reviewed but that's it.

Edited again to clarify: I have many star graded cards for my raw sets; however, I haven't taken the time to put them in the registry because quite frankly, I don't care to.
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

I'm against it, but only moderately so. It doesn't affect me nearly as much as it does to others it seems. I do see the reasoning behind the move to the new system and PSA being a business, I can't fault them for doing so if they feel it betters them. If this is how it's going to be, then so be it, and let's move forward.

I do admit that I may now have some reservations whenever buying high-dollar cards that have not been re-graded though. It's easy to say "buy the card, not the holder", but you can't always examine a card properly with just a scan. There'll aways be that feeling of "Is it really a 10 or a 9.5" and in this sense, existing high-grade cards are devalued a bit. I really don't think it's going to affect the lower grades by much.

    Against.

Have a couple thousand slabs, mostly 60s, some 50s and 70s; vast majority are PSA 8s. Have about 10 registered sets.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I don't need PSA to tell me what a high-end 8 is, I can tell for myself. I may resub some "high-end NMMT+" HOFers, but resent having to submit a card more than once. I have concerns that this and the latest brutal grading cycle helps PSA's bottomline, but benefits the collector little, if at all.

I am against it, but it is already done so I will learn to live with, I also had started 3 other sets not yet listed on registry yet and I am now sitting on the fence wondering what to do with them. I have one question though if I send in an 8 for this upgrade and it deserves to be a 9 will they bump it to a nine or just bump it to an 8.5 or a 7 that should be an 8.5 ect ect ? I might look though my 1940 set and the 65 football to see if any are worthy of a bump, but I will wait a few months for the back log that will happen when the big boys send in their 10 to 30 thousand cards to be regraded and then see how they are selling , just to see if it is worth the money for that .5 bump
S/H both ways plus the 5 or 6 dollar for each card or more to be regraded. JMO

against, but just have to see how it all shakes out in feb when they star doing their new scam , i dunno? changing it in middle of game just plain sucks of corporate greed to me -really sucks for guys that have a ton of sets unless you get the 99 cent special like davallio or 4sc/dsl ,the big boys- not us 1% down here in the hole in the road

    For it.

The big three are the same in grading criteria. I won't be bumping my old slabs and also most of the Registry sets are low grades.

Against. I have approximately 860 slabbed cards, which I paid about $14,500 for. However, I don't participate in the registry.

I think most of the people know where I stand- I'm for the change but against the way PSA is handling it. All of the cards in my collection are raw, but I buy mostly graded cards (then crack them out and keep them raw). I'm of the opinion that in the long run, the card will be worth what it's worth, regardless of the assigned number. As the registry cools off over time and stops influencing prices, you will see this take effect.

I have no Registry sets at the moment, but am working on listing Aaron, Mays, Clemente, and Julius Erving sets in the future. The half grade bump will not have a seriously negative effect on my sets and certainly could be positive as I check into the condition of my cards.

I have a sole reason for my opinion and that would be the special treatment of some collectors and the deals made before this decision, the opinions of one or more of these collectors to now a support the decision when they were against it at one point, and the fact that the rest of us will now pay the full cost of resubmitting our meager collections while others will get a break on pricing, shipping, and perhaps even some veiled commitment of a percentage of bumps.

As a business decision PSA and the well heeled collectors that have worked out deals have all made wise choices.

Ethically it stinks and says much about the mode in which some of our world operates.

Basically it says that anyone's opinion can be bought for a price.

My membership will come up for renewal in a few months. I'll consider very seriously about letting it lapse and switching to SGC. Not for financial reasons, but for the back room bargaining that has apparently occurred.

Just call me one of the 1%, and darned proud of it.

The collector with mostly PSA 9-grade Registry Sets is dealt a blow by this system, which rewards SUB PSA 9 cards that are strong for their grade while giving zero such benefit to PSA 9s. Registry Sets with mostly 9s now have to stand idly by while those below can close the gap (for a fee). For that matter, all PSA 9 cards (no matter how strong for their grade) have to stand pat while those below can improve both their value and their impact to a Registry Set.

PSA 9s commanded big premiums IN PART because they were ONE FULL POINT better than the next available grade, not a half point.

The Registry game is a competitive one, with standings, rankings, etc. Not everyone collects that way, but some do. Those who do (and spent, oh, let's just say over $100,000) and built all PSA 9 sets have no opportunity to improve under this system, which grants big opportunity for improvement to SUB PSA 9 sets and cards.

The PSA 8 you paid X for can now bump and sell for X+. But the PSA 9 you paid X for-- no equal potential improvement to its value monetarily or to your Registry set. If this is not corrected top Registrants will sour and pull out, and the Registry (a key driver of PSA's brand loyalty) will wither and die.

Let me be clear, though: I think if you want to pay for formal confirmation that your card is a 7.5 or 8.5 and sell it for more, go ahead. That is fine, cool, enjoy. But at least create a bonus/multiplier for 9s and 10s in the Registry so that those cards get some new love, too.

From 2004-06 I invested well over $13k in graded '69 topps baseball. I sold off the cards last year & invested in raw sets. My raw sets ('71-80) are comprised of about 30-45% psa crackouts however, so I still continued & continue to support psa, albeit in a manner most cu collectors (minus lee) do.

For me, I think I will personally benefit from the grading change, as the grading scale changes, my ability to buy more economical product will also.

However, if I had invested in bigger, more vintage sets, I would not support this.

Were any persons on these boards receiving dividend checks notified prior to this week?

Capitalism is great, but greed is corrupting & primary contributor to people leaving the hobby.

Against it just because it seems like an unecessary change really late in the game and a money grab. I don't see it having a major impact into how I collect.

Right now it's like 14-4 against it. I hope we don't have to go through this again for .25 grades in 15 years.

Against it. I have only one Registry set now, 1976 Topps Basketball, #2 ATF, 9.29 GPA.

The .5 grade doesn't affect me as I only have 4 8s in the set, but it is the principle and PSA's other problems, shortcomings and favoritism that has driven me away. My set is currently for sale and it will be broken up, probably at a loss of $2,000 or more, if it doesn't sell whole. I am done with PSA. I may buy an occasional oppertunity card, but I will no longer submit. I have paid over $10,000 in sub fees over the past 5 years, but no more $$ from me.

    I agree with Julen.

The changes will affect me in no way, but I see this as an overall negative for the hobby. It looks weak and greedy on PSA's behalf.

I'm against the change. If things were to change they should have a long time ago, not now. I used to collect cards from the late 60's to 70's. I currently have about 1000 slabs, most are in my #1 1982 Topps Set which is 9.30 GPA and 99.87% complete. I also have a t206 set which is a 3.76 GPA and 7.63% complete. This change shouldn't hurt my 82 set as there will be no 9.50. I have purchased plenty of vintage graded cards in the past. I know I would be unhappy right now if I still had those. I'm not into the crack and resubmit game. Game being the key word here. I understand there are thoughts that make some sense on both sides of this issue. My first reaction to the change was not a good one. Maybe I'll think differently later, or maybe not.

    Leaning in favor of it.

I have a couple hundred graded sets in progress on the registry - you name it, I collect it. I buy graded; I don't normally submit.

I love the fact that Poor and Fair are going to be separate grades. I have some pre-war HOFers that would have been slabbed quite some time ago if that were the case then. For future buying, it's a good thing for me - any price differentiation will work to my advantage as a buyer, because I'm more interested in completion than a set GPA.

As for my existing cards, I'm sure I have stacks of 8s from the '70s (and likely also of cards from the 60s and from the 50s) that could get a .5 higher grade on review, but for many of those cards, that would not be worth it even if I knew there would be a higher grade. Post-1975, many PSA 9s sell for $5 or less (and less than $10 for quite a few PSA 9s from the few prior years). No one will be resubmitting these and paying a full grading fee to bump 8s up to 8.5s. This adversely affects the value of a lot of lower-dollar graded cards I have - in the future if I were to sell them, I would have to compete with cards that were submitted later, looked the same as mine, but carried a half-point higher grade weight. Granted, we're only talking about a difference of 50 cents to a couple dollars on these cards, but if you have enough that are so affected, it adds up.

IMO the charge to review these is overly high for most common cards from the '60s or later - if an 8 is $12 and a 9 is $40, an 8.5 is probably not much more than $20, and the shipping cost and regrading fee will cost most of the "added value".

    1100 Shares of Collector's Universe

I'm not looking to retire on my collection. I'm not saying to my kids "See this Jeter? That'll be what's going to pay for your college!" This is something I've been doing for over 20 years, when my father first brought home some 87 wax packs. This is something I'll be doing for the next 20 years with my son. I've seen prices dump already back in the 90's and I'll see them dump again. Cards have never made me rich, they have paid that untimely bill every now and then. I get cards graded and sell them off to put more money into my collection. When I send a sub in, I start with 140 cards+ and end up with less than 30 by the time I scrutinize them over and over again. I normally get 9's or 10's on my subs because I don't take the gamble on cards that may not grade what I think they will. The times I have gotten 7's or 8's it was because I knew they were going to grade in that range and was willing to do it for sentimental reasons.

The half grades will affect very few of my sports registry sets. I like 9's and 10's in my sets. Any set that has lower than an 8 is because I'm collecting for the sake of collecting. My non sports sets will start having really screwey grades as some of them have so few cards out there graded that any grade will do.

It's somewhat ironic--a lot of people here have been making fun of the seller who is so opposed to grading and the main reason we believe is because he thinks all his cards are mint and PSA says they are ex mint to nr mint. Now after all of this half grade news, every one is sounding like that seller...If you are worried about the value of your cards, get a more disserning eye for them. If you think you're not going to make as much money for your cards, you have more problems than you realize. If you're going to take your cards to another grader, just do it already and leave these boards. I'm sorry that I'm ranting now but geez, this place has become such a buzzkill in the last few days. PSA is doing it right by not doing a 9.5 grade. Yeah, maybe they are doing half grades for a cash grab, but what company doesn't do things for cash grabs. The same people here whining about half grades don't whine about the fact Breyers shrank their tubs of ice cream and charged you more for it.

Oh, and before you start saying I'm a PSA homer because I'm a shareholder, maybe I am. I've lost money on my shares and I'm fine with it. As I said, I do what I want because I enjoy it. Not because I plan on retiring on it. Am I concerned that the graded card industry may have jumped the shark? Yeah. But it won't stop me from buying my 9's and 10's.

Maybe everyone here should just take a break and chill out a bit. Let it all play out before making any rash decisions. The sky ain't falling yet.
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?
