question about the mick?

i was at my dentist's office the other day and while laid back with his hands in my mouth i glanced to the left and noticed an autographed picture of mickey...i said (or tried to say) "holy crap!" it kind of scared him because he thought he hurt me or something. it was funny...
anyways, my question is this: he was batting and had a #6 on his jersey. i could not tell by his face that it was really him in the pic, but i do think he wore #6 for a while. can anyone else confirm this? and the auto was legit, in my opinion. i got a closer look before i left the office. it was cool, and kind of funny.

i think his rookie year he didn't wear #7 maybe it was 6, i read THE MICK recently but i can't remember what number he wore, but i recall he didn't always wear 7

looking for Topps 71-72 hi's-62-53-54-55-59, I have these sets started

  • Mick first made the Yanks big leage team in 1951, he was given # 6 because he was supposed to carry on the tradition of Ruth (#3) Gehrig (#4) & DiMaggio (#5). No pressure right? Well things didn't quite work out & he was sent down to the farm team in mid '51, when he made it back later that year he was given his famous #7.

I have a picture of the Mick crossing home plate after a homerun and being greeted by another Yankee wearing number 7.

Here you go! The picture is too big for my scanner so it cut off a bit around the edges but I think you get the idea.

  • Awesome pic, thanks for posting. Also something else you guys may not have noticed, but on his rookie card you can clearly see he is wearing #6. You can just see the shading of a full number on his back, not just the top like a 7 would be. Also, there are palm trees in the background indicating the photo was taken in spring training of 1951, when he would have been wearing #6.
