I would like to get everyones opinion on the top 10-20 cards of the 80's decade. I am thinking about getting some of the top cards from the 80's Autographed.
For baseball I would nominate the following cards....
1980 Topps Rickey Henderson 1982 Topps and/or Topps Traded Cal Ripken Jr 1983 Topps Wade Boggs / Ryne Sandberg / Tony Gwynn 1984 Donruss Don Mattingly 1984 Fleer Update Roger Clemens 1985 Topps Mark McGwire OLYMPIC 1987 Fleer Barry Bonds 1988 Score Traded Craig Biggio 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr

1981 Joe Montana 1982 Lawrence Taylor 1982 Ronnie Lott 1983 Marcus Allen 1984 Dan Marino 1984 John Elway 1984 Eric Dickerson 1985 Warren Moon 1986 Jerry Rice

Of course the '82 Ripken. No doubt about that one.
Maybe outside the box, but I'd enjoy seeing a signed card of Gregg Jeffries. That was the card to have at one point. And no, I am not joking. The 1988 Donruss Mark Grace was always one of my favorites as well.
How about a 1986 Topps Traded Bo Jackson? I don't know if we are talking currently...or historically.
Clear Skies, Mark
Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards. Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.
For me when I was a kid (which was the 80's) the mecca of the card collecting world was that 89 UD Griffey. We'd rip open those high end packs of Upper Deck praying to find one. Alas, I never did.
Atlanta Braves, Charlotte Hornets, Shawn Kemp, Dale Murphy, and Bobby Engram.
I might be compelled to fill a spot with your favorite Diamond Kings card from the 80's.
In addition, if we're going on popularity alone, an '89 Fleer Billy Ripken and '89 UD Dale Murphy reverse negative should be considered. Has Billy ever been one to sign a copy of that card?
i'd say the top 10 hobby changing/shaping cards of the 80s were:
1- 84F Update Roger Clemens (probably the first to break the $100 barrier, and got people paying attention to print run) 2- 84D Don Mattingly (just an iconic card, and probably the first regular issue card to break $100) 3- 85T Mark McGwire (amazed me to see that overproduced Topps card over $250) 4- 86D Jose Canseco (probably the second regular issue card to top $100, the year after its release! $20+/pack!!) 5- 89F Billy Ripken 'error' (at the height of the 'error card' craze, this one topped them all in popularity) 6- 89UD Ken Griffey Jr (another iconic card, first UD ever and a bigger name than Andy Pafko! Still holds its value despite ridiculous production) 7- 82TT Cal Ripken Jr (had no business in the set, had little demand before people discovered it was rare, and Cal on his own driving $ insane) 8- 80T Rickey Henderson (the first major rookie of the 80s was the James Brown of baseball and it's just a cool looking card) 9- 87F Bo Jackson (was there ever more hype over a player? the sport god and his prosthetic hip still holds minimal value for name alone) 10- 84TT Tiffany Dwight Gooden (was the Holy Grail of all Gooden rookies in the day. a beam of light shined down from heaven on all lucky owners and a choir of angels sang when ever it was shown.....say brotha, pass me that nose candy)
1983 Topps Traded Darryl Strawberry. It does have historical significance. 1984 Fleer Update Dwight Gooden-- a very significant rookie card. The 1984 TT was also a significant one.
1987 Donruss Greg Maddux--maybe not so significant in the beginning, but it gained notoriety later on.
1988 Score Update Roberto Alomar--there was a lot of hype on this card, so ket us not suddenly forget.
1988 Fleer Gregg Jefferies--we cannot forget this one either even though it is cheap to own now.
1989 Upper Deck Jim Abbott--the slow motion card. The 1988 Topps Traded card was also important and I am glad someone mentioned it too.

Personally I would love to get this one autographed. Do not see this Griffey rookie as often as the '89 UD. Of coarse I would crack the holder open first.
Gregg Jeffries RC's sold them for $8-12 all day long. cha-ching! lol. ah, the good old days! Sold Tom Gordon's 1989 UD XRC, Abbot Olympic and Topps Traded for big bucks!
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."
^^ lol, yeah I just realized I dont have one in my bucket. I have sheet pics, racks, saw cuts etc but not one of the normal error. Since I open my bucket in other sites for trading I keep all my version pics on my home computer. And on a backup disk.
<< <i>On the '89 Fleer note, have you tried to get Billy to answer any of your questions?
I'd like to see a signed copy of the '89 with an inscription of some sort. >>
I have Bill's address and have yet to send the letter. I think last time I saw you post on you getting ahold of the WTF creator I was going to send it but it got forgotten. Been sidetracked buying Dodgers. Im gonna get that going. I have a signed blown up 8x10 of a FF card that he signed "Donovan Good Luck Bill Ripken" but it's not in my bucket. I'll add it to the "Bill's handwriting" thread tomorrow.
The first BIG rookie card of the 80's, at the time, was the '81 Topps Joe Charboneau. As a 13 year old in '81 there was nothing bigger. Similar to the Gregg Jeffries hype later in the decade. I realize Joe didn't pan out but his card was about the hottest thing going in '81. Also, remember that at that time Rickey Henderson's rookie was popular but NOT nearly as popular as the '81 Charboneau. In fact, the biggest 1980 rookie card at that time was the Dan Quisenberry. That is true!
