I agree, looks like an eight... I inverted the colors on your pic and it looks to have an indentation such as an eight would have and not a straight "leg" like a six.

If you go to the link and supersize you can see what I think is some tooling to turn the 8 into a 6! My heart skipped a beat here as the Krause book has the 1776 listed as rare!
