Do you put your vintage cards in a penny sleeve before you store them in a 9 pocket album sheets?

When you guys put together a vintage set and store/display it in an album, do you put a penny sleeve over the card before putting the card in a 9 pocket sheet. Or do you just place the raw card directly into the sheets?

  • For my Heritage sets, I've been using this exact method. I place the card in the penny sleeve and then into the 9-pocket page. It seems to keep the card a bit more snug so it won't slide out.

The odd problem I've run into in the last year is that some of the Ultra Pro penny-sleeves that I've purchased at the shop are made just a fraction of centimeter too wide and don't fit perfectly into the 9-pocket pages anymore (the penny sleeves just sort of wrinkle inside the pocket and leave an air gap). Meanwhile, the Ultra Pro penny sleeves I purchase at the Comic book store fit perfectly. I'm not sure if the sleeves at the card shop are a new version or an older version. The pocket pages I'm using, by the way, are also Ultra Pros. That's the only snag I've run into. I brought this topic up once before on the board and didn't get a whole lot of feedback.
  • any new penny sleeves ive bought are a bit too wide. but i had a stash of old ones that fit just fine. sigh.

The penny sleeves do keep the card more snug in the pockets. The old penny sleeves are a little to wide and wont fit properly. The newer ones out now fit perfect.

Yes, I use penny sleeves inside 9-pocket pages. I've found that Ultra-Pro Platinum penny sleeves fit great, but the regular Ultra-Pro sleeves do not. My supply is a couple of years old though, so maybe they have tweaked the size recently.

So the mystery continues. Are the old sleeves too wide, or are the new ones too wide? How could my comic shop have more current supplies than my card shop?

I think its the other way around.

I put mine in trojan magnum condoms before they go in the slit.....of the 9 pocket page. I find they are sometimes a little too snug.

You need to make sure the penny sleeves dont crumple or wrinkle when getting then in the 9 pocket album pages. The right size penny sleeve is key here. I recommend them because the sleeve provides added protection against the elements. A snug fit prevents air from mixing with the card surface. The added benefit is that it will be easier to take the card out from the pages and safer too--no direct handling involved.

I recommend using a sleeve if you don't know the card very well. It's particularly important for vintage, as you have no idea where that card's been over the years. I mean, it's just not worth the risk.
