What is your current focus?

Mine is:
1954 Topps in PSA 6
T206 HOFers in PSA 4
1969 Topps Baseball in PSA 7

I think a thread like this could help us learn what others collect and possibly help each other out.

Well this has got me thinking. I primarily collect BB and FB HOF'ers. I don't have a particular focus on my own collection right now. Thanks for giving me something to ponder. I need to have a project. I have been focusing on my Ebay listings and preparing to build my own webpage with sale items, but that has come at the expense of my own collection. Hopefully this thread will give me some ideas on what to work on.

    Thanks!

What made me think of this is that I was reading on another thread today that Teknobailey is putting together a '49 Bowman set and I happen to have a '49 Bowman Johnny Vander Meer in PSA 6. The only reason that I bought it is because I was looking on eBay for items that were ending soon and it popped up with no bids. The name was mis-spelled and I picked it up for next to nothing with no other bids. I really didn't need it, it was just cheap and I figured it would make some good trade bait some day. I PM'd him and he may or may not need it, but I now know he collects '49 Bowmans and have the opportunity to help him out if he needs it and maybe trade it for something that I would rather have instead.

    Cards:
    1935 National Chicle PSA 1 - PSA 3
1948 Leaf PSA 3 - PSA 5 (well centered only)
1972 NFLPA Vinyl Stickers (just need Bob Hayes to finish the set)
2001 Topps XFL master set (down to a couple autos and most of the game used balls)

    Other:
Official footballs from major "other" leagues (just need WLAF)
Autographed mini-helmets from the top 25 all-time NFL rushers... (just need Fred Taylor & Warrick Dunn)

With many of these sets near the end or rarely offered, I am considering either 1950 Bowman PSA 4 - PSA 6 or 1955 Topps All American PSA 5 or better.

    Snorto~

in the last couple months i have really started trimming down my collection and streamlining it to projects that i really enjoy. i went a good couple years with buying anything i could that i felt i was getting a deal on and in the end ended up with a bunch of stuff i really wasn't interested in.

so know i'm focusing on (along with a little explanation):

1987 Topps FB complete set - autographed - i am roughly 1/3 of the way through and am really enjoying it.

Kirby Puckett Master Set - i have a few graded but the majority of it is raw. i'd say i have about 600 different and am working on getting a wantlist together.

Al Newman Master Set - All raw. I know what you're thinking - Al Newman??? - but growing up in MN during the Twins glory years i just loved this guy. I am down to about 6 or 7 really, really obscure cards that i need.

1965 Topps BB raw EX set - about half done with a good amount of the stars already out of the way. as a kid my uncle gave me a handful of cards from his childhood and i have had a soft spot for 65s ever since. i haven't added any in a long time and have thrown around the idea of getting out of this one but i just can't bring myself to just yet.

Troy Bell Master Set - also raw. He only played a handful of games in the NBA after being a first rounder for Memphis a few years ago. I coached him at a basketball camp when i was in college and he was going into his junior year of HS. we spent a good chunk of the week hanging out and playing ball. The vast majority of his cards are of the Jersey-Auto-Refractor type and i would guess i have about 50 different - maybe half or so done.

Barry Sanders Master Set - The majority of which is raw. my favorite football player of all time, also working on a wantlist. i've got 300 of so different right now.

Al Toon Master Set - also raw. My favorite player as a kid. I was a die-hard Jets fan (don't ask me why). Just starting this one.

and maybe the strangest one - Trish Stratus master set. I'm a huge dork and still enjoy wrestling and sexy ladies. its kind of a fun side project.

i am slowly but surely whittling down the rest of the junk that i have accumulated, mainly through Ebay, but have worked out a few trades along the way for things i need. If you have anything you think i might be interested i would love to try to work something out. I would happily trade in your favor value-wise.

    luke

    Slowly but surely working on:
    • Kirby Puckett
    • Al Newman
    • Al Toon
    • Troy Bell

All over the place. I find it's better to have a bunch of sets going across several eras, so when one set gets hot and prices go up I can focus on another.
I'm looking for T218, T220, E91, Cracker Jacks, Sport Kings, '49 Leaf baseball, '41 Goudey, '57 Topps basketball, '61 Fleer basketball, 1906 Fan Craze, '50's and earlier unopened packs, uncut sheets, and a bunch of Heritage from each year.
Takes longer to finish sets this way, but it's not a race.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

Here's what's currently on my agenda (I do set runs):

    FOOTBALL:
    1. Extend my current run of Topps FB sets (1983-91) to at least 1980-94 (possibly up to 1999 and will certainly consider doing 1974-79 later)
    2. Topps 1000 Yard Club insert sets along with the Topps Football stickers/albums
    3. Run of Beckett Football Card Monthly up to at least 1996 or so

    BASEBALL:
    1. Donruss & Score 1996-98 sets
    2. Fleer 1996-99 sets
    3. Topps 2005-07 sets
    4. ALL Topps Send-in glossy sets
    5. ALL 1993 Fleer insert sets and some 1995 Ultra insert sets
    6. 1996 and 1997 Finest silver (and possibly gold) sets
    7. 1993 Flair Wave of the Future, 1994-95 Flair regular/insert sets (will possibly extend this run of regular Flair sets to 1999)
    8. 1996-present Ultra Gold Medallion sets (I already have 1995)
    9. Diamond Kings (1993-95) and Mantle/Mays/Clemente/Ryan/Aaron Finest insert sets (1996-2000)
    10. 1974 and 1975 Topps sets

Then once all these are done, I guess all that'll basically be left is upgrading existing sets and trying to go even further back for both the Topps baseball and Topps football sets. And of course, enough BCW pages/binders (I have to buy these by the CASE folks) to hold all these sets.

My interests right now are the following:

I am collecting 30 of the top regular issued cards from Topps set from 1959-1985. The 1959 set is a mix of PSA 5, 6 and two 7's. The 1960's-1973 sets are PSA 6 or 7, 1974-1979 are 7 or 8 and 1980 forward are 8 and 9. Here is where I am at right now:

    1959 - Complete
    1960 - 1/30 Only have Whitey Ford
1961 - 29/30 - Only need Hank Aaron. The Mantle is an attractive PSA 5.
1962 - 10/30 - Still need most of the big guns. I do have the Mays.
1963 - 12/30 - I probably won't get the Rose and Stargell. Those cards are just too ugly to spend that kind of coin. Especially, the Rose.
1964 - 23/30 - Have all the big guns minus Clemente and Aaron. I do like the Rose from 1964.
1965 - 4/30 - Have a long way to go with this one. I do have the Carlton though.
1966 - 22/30 - Still need Mantle, Aaron, Mays and Koufax.
1967 - 27/30 - Still need Seaver, Carew and Robby. Will end up settling for a nice 5 on the Seaver.
1968 - 29/30 - Need the Ryan. Will most likely get a 6, but could buy a 5 if the price is right.

    1969-1980 are all complete.

    1981 - 28/30 - Need Stargell and Niekro in PSA 8 or 9.
1982 - 27/30 - Need Ripken (I have the traded), Fisk and Murray in PSA 8 or 9. I just haven't bothered with the Ripken, since it is so easy to get.
    1983 - Complete
    1984 - Complete
    1985 - 29/30 - Need Joe Morgan in PSA 9.

Side projects: 1959 Topps set raw with the stars graded. Need about 90 to complete a mostly EX-EX-MT set. Have Topps Base Set Run 1969, 1973, 1974, 1976-2006. I am working on PSA sets of the top 30 for 1981-1985 Donruss and 1984 and 1985 Fleer. Also, I buy PSA graded Baseball rookies of superstars and future Hofers (Biggio, Griffey, McGwire, Glavine, Pujols etc) and collect the top 27 or 36 from baseball sets I like from the late 80's on forward. The reason for the top 27 or 36 is they fill 3 or 4 pages to put in a binder. This is a cheap easy way to get cards I like without taking up a lot of space. I buy most of the cards on sportlots.

Potential Future Projects: Get the top 25 or 30 for Topps Sets from the 50's Probably minus 1952 Topps and pre 1952 Bowman sets. Also, may start a PSA 5-7 1954 Bowman set. Also, may start buying the top 10 or 15 of each year from 70's and 80's Hockey and 60-86 Football.

    All-Time Redskins raw rookies autographed
Raw basic rookies sets of Troy Polamalu, Jerome Bettis, Hines Ward, Casey Hampton, and Chris Samuels. I know this sounds easy, but I don't want to simply buy them all from ebay, sportlots or beckett marketplace. I am trying to trade for them or buy them at shows to make it more interesting.

    i have no focus!!!!!!!!!!

i would like to be completing a raw 70 topps set, upgrading my 55 topps all american set, getting a hold of a raw 77 topps set (baseball), picking up reasonable t 206 cards, 52 topps (baseball), and working on 55 topps and bowman raw sets.

but as you can see i got alot of irons in the fire and keep getting more when i think a good deal comes up, i got to stop that!!!!

I just love the variety in everyone's foci. And I love that I was just able to use "foci" in a sentence. My focus has been on my raw Marcus Allen ultra-complete player set. Secondarily, I've been bottom feeding Marcus Allen PSA 10's. My time and attention and money is too focused on other aspects of my life right now to pursue any other collecting interests. But I have grand plans for when my boy graduates college in 2029!
