Losing focus?

I was wondering if any of you have gone through this?It seems lately I am having a hard time separating being a dealer and a collector.I have been putting all my time in to my Ebay and Sportlots stores and not focusing on the sets I collect at all.I'm kind of disturbed by this trend as I have always been a collector first and a dealer second(only to supplement my collecting).Does anyone have any advice on how to walk this line and mantain my love of this hobby?Any advice would be great.Thank you.

  • Mike,

This has happened to me too or sometimes I will loose focus and try to do too many sets at once. What I did was write down my collecting goals. When I think I am loosing focus, I just refer back to my list of goals. Whenever I go to a show I take that list, just as I take my set checklists. If I am at a show and I see something that catches my eye, before I buy it I just pull out the list and ask myself if I really need it and does it fall within my goals. So that is my advice - write down your collecting goals and update it as needed.
  • Thank you for the great advice.I am 26 and have been collecting Topps Baseball sets since I was 5.I have now started to get into the late 1960's sets. There isn't much to pick up around here lately and I think that is part of the problem.I don't like to buy off of Ebay to much for various reasons. How is this site for buying and trading?I would really like to finish my 1972 set but the lack of availablity lately has discouraged me.
    Thanks again.

  • When there is a lack of stuff to pick up is when we really start loosing focus. It's so easy. We feel we just have to buy something and then when a card comes around that we really want, we might not have the money at the time because we spent our money on something that really wasn't within our focus - that's why the list of collecting goals helps me.

Rube also offered some great advice with the b/s/t boards. I just picked up some real nice high grade cards from another member (Thanks, Twunk!) on the b/s/t boards for my 1975 Topps Set.
  • Thanks. You guys really beat the hell out of the Beckett Boards.Over there it seems like if the card isn't shiney then it is not important to the hobby.I am not one to bash anyones collecting choices so I expect the same. You guys really seem to love this hobby and everything it offers old or new.I think I will enjoy my time here. Thanks everyone.
